The programme is proud to host the Malaria Molecular Surveillance training at our Kilifi campus. In line with our mandate to generate high-quality scientific evidence and build sustainable research capacity across Africa, this two-week programme brings together participants from 13 African countries for intensive, hands-on wet-lab work and advanced bioinformatics training.
The training is supported and facilitated through a partnership with Africa CDC (@AfricaCDC) and the African Society for Laboratory Medicine (@ASLM_News), strategic partners with whom we continue to strengthen continental capacity in malaria genomics and support efforts to translate research into impactful public health actions.
Dr. @pkiyuka hosted the Science Journalism Kenya (SCIJOURN-K) project end-of-program workshop. This three month pilot brought journalists and researchers together with one goal: turning complex science into clear, compelling stories the public can trust.
The collaboration resulted in 10 published stories across mainstream and digital platforms, showing what’s possible when expertise and storytelling come together with purpose.
Grateful to @KEMRI_Kenya , @KEMRI_Wellcome , @ucsc Science Communication Program, @aaas , @schmidtsciences , and all the journalists, researchers, and editors who made this journey meaningful.
🧬 Where are artemisinin resistance signals emerging in Kenya?
📚 New research tracking over 24,000 samples from schoolchildren across Western Kenya reveals rising genetic markers linked to resistance, including the concerning A675V mutation, which has spread rapidly since 2019. The findings show the urgent need to strengthen routine surveillance and confirm treatment efficacy.
