Upcoming Event - June 1: Vancouver Tall: Building Higher Downtown The City of Vancouver is launching an international ideas competition to inspire a ‘made-for-Vancouver' approach to taller buildings.
For more info or to get your tickets: https://t.co/rqMWu6bM5r
** Of note: the design competition is looking for approaches to taller buildings that "emphasize how buildings contribute to the public realm and support a vibrant, livable downtown." **
Just what we DON'T need in Vancouver: the City is proposing to "authorize the placement, construction, maintenance and operation of large format third party electronic advertising signs on streets."
And no, this isn't a temporary FIFA thing...
...The proposal to sell off streets and sidewalks as "ad space" is going to be debated tomorrow (Tues, May 19).
** Council report: https://t.co/xsKwz6AI4v
** Share your thoughts: https://t.co/PynDrSmsvR... Tell Council to turn down this terrible idea.
If approved, this proposal to allow large format advertising on streets and sidewalks will
- Take up valuable sidewalk space
- Increase visual pollution and distraction
- Impact neighbourhood identity
- Commodify the public realm
It's a terrible idea.
VANCOUVER DAY 140+ On this day in 1886, the city of Vancouver was incorporated – on territories that are the traditional and unceded homelands of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. The Nations have lived here since “time out of mind.”

We're very excited to see Council make this investment in Car Free Days.
Let's go one step further and think about long-term sustainability and a way to reduce permit and event related costs. So many important events are struggling!

Another valentine card goes to all the folks enjoying, stewarding, and supporting these special places in the city. Your presence makes the city a joy.
Happy Valentine’s everyone! Sending BIG love to Vancouver’s beautiful public spaces. Our parks, plazas, libraries, community centres and high streets are the beating hearts of our neighbourhoods. #PublicSpaceIsForEveryone#PSILoveYou Photo: 2008 VPSN Valentine’s at Robson Sq
Moonrise peeking over @vancouverpubliclibrary Central Branch in Downtown Vancouver. Libraries are a great example of free and accessible public spaces!
What's your favourite library branch?
Today is #WorldWetlandsDay & we’re sharing a note of gratitude for Vancouver’s wetlands and the stewards that tend to them.
Wetlands help to filter, clean and absorb stormwater, support flood control, sequester carbon, cool the environment, and provide important habitat...
Looking for a good winter and spring adventure? Check out one of these spots and see the wetlands in action. Is there one you’re particularly fond of? Let us know!
As we reach the solstice, and welcome the return of longer days, we wish you and your loved ones the very best of the season.
May your days be filled with warmth, community... and joyful times in public space!
Today is the International Day for Persons with Disabilities. Good public spaces are accessible to all.
Did you know the City has an Accessibility Strategy? Public space is one of the areas of focus. You can check it out here:
