After years of anonymity it’s time for a reveal: I’m Milan (de Reede), the person behind the Mira Hurley account.
When I started posting on Twitter I worked at the Dutch central bank. To keep my crypto interests and my work separate, and because I was and am very critical of central banks, I needed an anonymous account.
When I moved to a crypto policy position at the central bank, which is a whole other story, anonymity became even more important:
1. After writing a widely shared critique of Bitcoin, someone dug up my real name and employer. They contacted my workplace, timestamping my posts to match them to Dutch working hours, highlighting posts they thought most objectionable to a central bank, and suggested they "do something about it."
2. I've received death threats, with one person including my home address in the threat. While likely just keyboard warriors, it was still concerning.
Because of this I understand why people prefer discussing crypto anonymously, and I gained an increased appreciation for privacy.
The reason I'm revealing my identity now is two-fold.
1. I left the central bank and started @NanoGPTCom together with @tweaterdotdk.
For those unfamiliar, NanoGPT provides access to a wide range of AI text and image generation models with a strong focus on user privacy.
We're proud of NanoGPT's growth and of decentralizing AI access, and revealing my identity allows us to grow NanoGPT (and Nano) faster.
2. We recently incorporated NanoGPT as a business. This means my real name is linked to NanoGPT. At least one person has already made the connection - there will be more. I'd rather "reveal" myself than have it be a gotcha.
My doxxing also comes with other advantages:
- I can attend meetups as myself.
- I'm now able to accept podcast and speaking requests.
- I can explain and spread crypto to a far broader audience.
I've always been very enthusiastic about crypto and it feels like I can do a lot more now.
To everyone who's followed Mira Hurley over the years: Hello world! It's nice to re-meet you all as Milan. My content will remain the same as it always has been, and I'm looking forward to speaking with you.

The Nano Network has been under a heavy spam attack since February 25 (Sunday). However, non-spam transactions have barely been affected. From a user perspective, the spamming entity is mostly just punishing itself.
I recorded this demo as an evidence of nano's resilience. ++
A few relevant considerations:
*All the following is publicly available information and is NOT a technical report. This is a personal perspective made for entertainment and educational purposes.
1. The ledger has grown by 4 million blocks (from ~186.54 million to ~190.60 million) since this post I made on February 15 [https://t.co/FPtyHHbnWv].
2. This is a 2% growth in 15 days, of which most happened in the past 5 days, from an 8-year-old network, evidencing the size of this attack.
3. We have seen backlogs larger than 1.2 million blocks, mostly made by spam transactions.
4. 90% of all transactions made in the past seven days were confirmed in less than 24 minutes, according to https://t.co/n7VxEtoZDG. 50%, in 0.52 seconds.
5. The last 10% are taking more than 2 days to confirm, and it is safe to assume most of them are made of what we are calling spam transactions.
6. Nevertheless, I'm a high-frequency nano user and have used nano daily for the past 5 days. Unaffected. For example:
A. I have sent and received multiple tips,
B. I've donated to @AbiolaBlackdiva's Diva's Kitchen Easter campaign [https://t.co/sciylr1BwL],
C. I've deposited and withdrawn from @NanoGPTcom [https://t.co/pbVXMA0pSU].
7. Cry harder, spammer.
8. Every system/network is prone to spam. Permissionless networks are easier to spam, for very obvious reasons.
9. Most permissionless networks focus on making it harder (or more costlier) to spam. With an obvious trade-off that it also makes it harder (and costlier) to transact/use. If not impossible, under high saturation (e.g., higher fees than available balances, making dust) [https://t.co/6djJP12rGz].
10. Nano's focus is ensuring all users can still use the network, unaffected, even under high saturation - organic or not (spam).
11. There is still a lot of work to be done. We are not *THERE* yet, but we are very, very close.
12. Hopefully, this quick demo will help evidence that. I wish my transaction went through instantly, as usual, but a 1-minute wait under such a heavy and historical spam attack is good enough for me.
13. I didn’t use any special setups. Just a free and accessible mobile wallet connected to a public node.
14. Interestingly, it is still faster than most popular networks under normal conditions. For example:
A. Bitcoin needs ~2 hours (10min * 12 blocks) to reach secure probabilistic finality. [https://t.co/QCkkjmWS6L]
B. Litecoin needs ~30 minutes (2.5min * 12 blocks)
15. These "secure" status can be disputed.
Ok, you are right.
Just don't forget that we are talking about deterministic finality, fully irreversible transactions on nano. So, we should look for very high standards elsewhere for a fair comparison, but ok... I'll bite...
16. ...I still received my transaction much faster than what both networks take to confirm one single block (which is, undisputably, NOT ENOUGH for them).
I agree. Pretty amazing, indeed.
17. FWIW, 1 nano transaction comprises 2 confirmations (send and receive). But the send block is already irreversible and a fully confirmed spend that will inevitably be added to the receiver's account when they decide to publish their unique receive-block.
In summary, the transaction you saw on the video was fully and securely confirmed by a decentralized feeless network under heavy spam attack in 1 minute.
Yeah... PRETTY. AMAZING. INDEED.
What spam?
Just use nano.
