Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of the United States, personally saved 77 people from drowning as a teenage lifeguard, and he kept count by carving a notch into a log for every life he pulled out of the water. For seven summers he worked the treacherous Rock River in Illinois, and by the end that log had 77 notches in it. Long before Hollywood or politics, he was already a documented, record-keeping hero. Most people go a lifetime without saving one life. He carved 77 marks into a piece of wood.

His first career was in radio, and it produced one of the great improv moments in broadcasting. Reagan was a sports announcer who "called" Chicago Cubs games he wasn't even at, recreating the action live from short telegraph messages tapped out in Morse code. One day, mid-game, the telegraph wire went dead. Rather than admit he had no idea what was happening, Reagan just made it up on the fly. He had the batter foul off pitch after pitch after pitch for several minutes, inventing a marathon at-bat out of thin air, until the wire came back to life. Nobody listening had a clue.

Then he became a Hollywood actor, and yes, one of his movies co-starred a chimpanzee. In "Bedtime for Bonzo," Reagan played a professor trying to raise a chimp like a human child. A future President spent a chunk of his acting career acting opposite a monkey, and his opponents never let him forget it.

His most famous quirk in office was jelly beans. Reagan started eating them to kick a pipe-smoking habit, then got so hooked that he kept a jar on the Oval Office desk and put bowls of them out at cabinet meetings. A special blueberry flavor was even invented so there'd be red, white, and blue jelly beans at his inauguration.

And to relax, he escaped to his California ranch to ride horses and clear brush by hand, calling horseback riding good for "the inside of a man."

So the real Ronald Reagan: saved 77 lives and notched each one in a log, invented a fake baseball game live on air when the wire died, acted alongside a chimpanzee, ran the country on jelly beans, and cleared brush on horseback to unwind.

That's a President.
