Why light despite being the fastest will never reach the end of the known Universe!
Light is the fastest thing known to humans.
In a vacuum, it travels at an astonishing speed of 299,792 kilometers per second (or roughly 186,000 miles per second). At this speed :-
- It takes about 8 minutes and 20 seconds (x = 0.00001581 years) for light to travel from the Sun to Earth.
- It takes 4.24 years to reach Proxima Centauri, the closest known star to us after the Sun.
- It takes over 100,000 years to cross our own galaxy, the Milky Way.
- To reach Andromeda, our nearest major galaxy, light would need about 2.5 million years.
- To cross the observable universe, light would need around 93 billion years, but here’s the twist, the universe is expanding faster than the speed of light.
Yes, you read that right.
The expansion of the universe outpaces light itself.
This means that no matter how fast light travels, there are parts of the cosmos it will never be able to reach.
These regions are literally moving away faster than light can catch up, due to what’s known as metric expansion.
Imagine the scale of that…
A universe so vast and accelerating so quickly that even the fastest thing in existence will never see its edge.
Other Mind-Blowing Examples:
1.A photon emitted during the Big Bang is still traveling today, and we detect it as the cosmic microwave background, 13.8 billion years later.
2.A signal sent today would take over 21,000 years to reach the center of our galaxy.
3.Voyager 1, launched in 1977 and traveling at ~17 km/s, would take over 70,000 years to reach Proxima Centauri.
