Breaking down the key difference between the regular volume indicator and volume profile.
Many people new to volume seem to mess this up. So let's break it down:
Standard volume indicator.
The standard volume indicator shows you volume per time window. This is 99% of the time based on what timeframe you watch. High volume in a candle tells you a simple story. There was high or low interest within the time based candle. It doesn't show you anything else.
The volume profile.
A volume profile shows you the same data. (If using Trading view), but in a different more precise way. The volume profile shows you where volume transacts, not just when. This helps you identify which price levels actually have interest and which ones don't. Not just that, you also see the level of highest activity also known as the point of control.
Understanding how you read a simple volume profile will greatly increase your understanding of volume transacting within a market. This doesn't mean that the time based volume indicator is useless. It still shows you interest. You just don't know where, you know when.
