JUST IN:
A Free State police officer and three other people have died following a shooting incident in Hennenman in the early hours of this
morning.
The 47-year-old officer, who was stationed in Hennenman as a Rural Safety Coordinator, went searching for his girlfriend after reporting for duty on Saturday afternoon.
After failing to find her at one location, he went with the girlfriend’s uncle to another venue where family members were attending an event.
Police say an argument broke out after he was informed that the woman was not there.
The officer allegedly opened fire, killing the girlfriend’s mother, her uncle and the 25-year-old woman. Two other people were wounded, with one taken to hospital and another treated at the scene for a graze wound.
The officer then returned to his vehicle and shot himself.
Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia condemned the incident, describing it as “deeply disturbing and senseless”, and extended condolences to the affected families. The motive for the shooting remains unknown and is under investigation.
Cases of murder, attempted murder and an inquest will be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

A former Pretoria midwife, Yolande Maritz Fouchee (48), has been sentenced to an effective 23 years’ direct imprisonment by the Pretoria High Court for crimes committed against pregnant women and their babies between 2019 and 2020.
Fouchee, who operated a maternity practice in Murrayfield, was convicted on multiple charges including assault, culpable homicide, fraud and employing an unqualified person.
The court heard that she failed to identify and refer pregnancy complications, falsely claimed she could manage certain births, and administered labour-inducing drugs to patients without their knowledge.
One of the victims’ babies, nine-day-old Noah Von Kloeg, died after complications were allegedly overlooked.
Despite pleading not guilty, the State presented expert medical evidence and testimony from victims and witnesses, securing convictions on all counts.
During sentencing, prosecutors argued that Fouchee showed no remorse and failed to accept responsibility for the harm caused.
Judge Papi Mosopa agreed, finding that Fouchee acted negligently and endangered the lives of mothers and children.
The NPA welcomed the sentence, saying it delivers justice for the victims and reinforces accountability for crimes against women and children.
