Her name was Grishma Vekariya.

She was 21 years old and a Bachelor of Commerce student at JZ Shah College in Surat, Gujarat. She lived with her mother and younger brother Dhruv in Pasodara, while her father worked in the diamond business in Nigeria.

Fenil Goyani was 18 years old and had studied in the same school as Grishma. He wanted a relationship with her. She refused, and her family repeatedly told him to stay away.

On the evening of February 12 2022, Fenil arrived outside Grishma’s home carrying a large knife. When her brother Dhruv and her uncle asked him to leave, he grabbed Grishma, pressed the knife to her throat and dragged her away from the house.

In front of her family, neighbours and bystanders who were recording the incident on their phones, he slit her throat.

When her brother and uncle tried to intervene, he stabbed both of them. He then injured himself with the same knife.

Grishma died at the scene. Her brother and uncle survived.

Police arrested Fenil four days later. Investigators filed a 2,500-page chargesheet and presented statements from more than 190 witnesses, along with CCTV footage and videos recorded by bystanders.

The Surat Sessions Court convicted him in April 2022 and sentenced him to death in May 2022, describing it as a rarest of rare case. The court observed that the murder was premeditated and that Fenil had shown no remorse during the trial.

Under law, the death sentence was referred to the Gujarat High Court for confirmation. The case remains pending.

Grishma’s father Nandlal flew back from Nigeria to attend her funeral. After the sentencing, he said: “Nothing can fill the void created by my daughter’s untimely death. But I can say that justice has been done.”

A 21-year-old student said no. The answer she received was a knife in front of her own home.

Supreme Court Ends Marriage After 23 Years, Says A Husband Is Not A Prisoner; Courts Cannot Force Husband-Wife Relationship.

A man spent over 23 years living separately, yet the legal battle continued while the marriage remained alive only on paper.

The Supreme Court finally stepped in and made it clear that courts cannot force a husband and wife to remain together when the relationship is completely dead.
