Yes, I pinned Tunku's words in my bio. That promise of a secular state remains our shield against outright theocracy.
But let's be honest, he was an Anglophile. His 'liberal society' echoed his Oxbridge education more than the lived reality of everyday Malaysians.

Hong Kong movie, based on Carrian Group. Carrian collapsed in 1983 due to fraud. Bank Bumiputera was one of the largest lenders to Carrian. Fascinating tale.
Just look at the official statistics. Bumi absolute majority in pop (64%) and majority in the professions.
Yet, they keep attacking the non-b as wanting to take over power and to marginalise the bumi.
How is this possible?
The simple answer is that the non-b, esp. the Chinese, are being used as the bogeymen for the massive failure of the Malay political leadership. The Malay leadership needs to invent and maintain the Chinese as the main enemy so that they can keep the Malay pop under control and, here is the real reason: keep benefiting from the NEP policies. If the Chinese were no longer the bogeymen, the Malay pop would find out the big scam, and that would be the political end for the current Malay elite.
The secret sauce is to add a religious layer to the animus towards the Chinese; now the bogeymen are even worse—they not only want to take power from the Malays but also want to take away the religion.
The beauty of this scam is that, after 50 years of indoctrination, facts do not matter anymore. So the Govt can publish these official statistics, and the Malay population will not be able to see the political lie that is in front of them.
38% of the Malay workforce is tertiary-educated, but they can't connect the dots between what the Malay politicians say and what the statistics actually reveal.
What is the solution? Que Sera, Sera..
