I’m now living through the worst moments any human being could experience on the face of this earth. In the Al-Sabra neighborhood, near the Al-Zeitoun area, the military vehicles are approaching — no more than half a kilometer away.

The sound of tank tracks pierces through my chest. Gunfire hasn’t stopped for an entire hour. Helicopters are flying above us at a lower altitude than usual, while quadcopters are firing bullets randomly. Every five minutes, three shells fall in succession.

What is this madness? What is this madness!

We can see our souls leaving our mouths. Fear has overtaken me — so completely that it could terrify fear itself.

Why all of this?

🔴 Don’t Blame Isak. Don’t Pity Guehi. Look Deeper.

So much noise about who behaves and who deserves what. “Isak threw his toys out the pram, Wissa postured, Guehi stayed quiet like a good lad.” That’s the line. But it’s a cartoon version of football.

#Guehi was professional. He trained, stayed ready, said goodbye with class, waited. It didn’t matter. #CPFC didn’t get their business done. Their manager threatened to walk. And so Guehi, despite being willing and prepared, stays put. No move, no reward.

#Isak? #NUFC knew from February he wanted out. He told the club early, didn’t hide it, didn’t flinch. They knew #LFC would pay the piper. He handled it like a grown-up who knew what he wanted. So why paint that as petulance?

This need to divide players into heroes and villains for making career moves is childish. You can be principled and miss your chance. You can be bold and get your reward. You can be both and still be misunderstood.

Clubs lie, delay, spin. But the player gets dissected. Told to shut up, wait their turn, honour the piece of paper they signed when the picture was completely different. If they push back, they’re “trouble.”

But football careers are short. Autonomy matters. Power sits with the clubs and the billionaires behind them. If a player finds a way to move in that landscape, good on them.

Guehi didn’t lose out because he was too nice. He lost out because the structure failed him. Just as Isak forced his way free from one of the most unmoveable ownership structures in the sport.

There’s no rulebook for this. Only outcomes. And a bit of empathy wouldn't go amiss.
