Represented H.E. President @WilliamsRuto at an Africa CDC side event during the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, where I presented Kenya's case for a stronger African pharmaceutical manufacturing industry.

I conveyed the President's call for Africa to reduce its dependence on imported medicines and strengthen local production, in line with the African Union's ambition to meet 60 per cent of its health-product needs through local manufacturing by 2040.

Kenya highlighted its preparations to manufacture Alimatravir, an investigational once-monthly oral HIV-prevention medicine, while also calling for harmonised regulation, pooled procurement, long-term financing, technology transfer and coherent national policies.

Africa's health security and sovereignty will depend on building not only manufacturing capacity, but also the markets, financing and regulatory systems needed to make local production sustainable and competitive.

The event was attended by PS Dr. Ouma Oluga (Medical Services), CEOs Dr. Mercy Mwangangi (SHA), Eng. Anthony Lenyaiyara (DHA), Dr. Elias Meli (NCI), Dr. Adrew Mulwa (NASCOP), among other senior ministry officials.

Joined H.E. President @WilliamsRuto at the European Corporate Council on Africa and the Middle East (ECAM Council) Summit side event on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he highlighted Kenya's progress in transforming healthcare through Taifa Care.

The President noted that Taifa Care, through the Social Health Authority (SHA) has registered more than 32 million people and channelled $1.4 billion to health facilities across all 47 counties, supporting over 500,000 surgeries and treatment for more than 50,000 cancer patients.

He also highlighted the work of 107,000 Community Health Promoters (CHPs) serving more than nine million households.

Further, President Ruto called for greater African ownership of health security through local training, pharmaceutical manufacturing and stronger supply chains.

He outlined plans for 15 new hospitals, backed by an estimated $419 million investment, positioning Kenya to strengthen its role as a regional hub for specialised healthcare, medical education, research and innovation.

The session was chaired by ECAM Council Chairman Kamel Ghribi and attended by Prime Minister of Albania H.E. Edi Rama and Italy's Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Antonio Tajani.
