Over the years of dealing with Parliament, interacting with MPs, and watching how politics actually works in this country, one thing I know is some Opposition MPs often walk away with more financial “benefits” than a huge majority of NRM MPs. And Joel Ssenyonyi is no exception.

When you chair a committee like COSASE or PAC, you get silent requests. Requests to bury things. Requests to look away. Requests to “handle” issues quietly because Accounting Officers are terrified of exposure. That’s the real currency of these committees.

So yes, you can make noise about sectors you barely understand e.g road construction, behind the scenes, the deals are flowing. By the time Joel was transferred from COSASE, the evidence was already on his face. Those round cheeks don’t grow on parliamentary air.

Some MPs are literally paid not to raise objections. Others are paid not to attend committee meetings because their voices are too loud. In this Parliament, shouting is a revenue stream. Silence is a revenue stream. Attendance is a revenue stream. Absence is a revenue stream. Everything is monetised except integrity.

I remember Joel trying to take credit for the President’s action against Uganda Airlines as if his noise, not the internal rot and documented failures, triggered anything. He knew nothing about the aviation industry, but that didn’t stop him from performing for the cameras.

This is the Parliament we have in this extremely important period for us as a country.
