Happy #FoodJusticeFriday. What is your root in the #foodjustice movement? I will add an anti-capitalism root to this and also a environmental justice root map next to it.
Those of us working on sustainable agriculture should remember that one aspect of sustainability is justice, and there has been decades of discrimination against black farmers in the US. Reparations should be part of a sustainable agriculture agenda https://t.co/JHa4Y4PG6J
Massachusetts is leading the charge in dual-use solar installations, making it possible to grow some crops and pasture animals while generating clean energy. https://t.co/TfrpF1PGUY
USDA, a world leader in scientific information for farmers and consumers, has refused to publicize dozens of studies warning of the effects of climate change — including on rice, humanity’s most important crop https://t.co/kKrKPn6yPs
Moving dedicated @USDA_ERS and @USDA_NIFA staff away from other @USDA departments shows that he's not concerned with addressing the real concerns of family #farmers.
Today's #TBT podcast is @LatinoUSA's #NAFTA episode. It really makes you think. Ex: post-NAFTA, a rural village gets its road paved. It's FIRST vehicle was a @CocaCola truck. So pregunta: why can't we stick some broccoli in a Coke truck to leverage their distribution system?
The effects of NAFTA in México run deeper than putting small farmers out of business. It profoundly changed the food system.
Fantastic episode about NAFTA, food and health, w/ interesting thoughts about feminism @LatinoUSA@Maria_Hinojosa@alyshiagalvez https://t.co/1i89Uq5Khy
Today's podcast rec, #gravypodcast from @southfoodways, packs a ton into a short episode: the responsibility that comes with privilege, how food gets in to your body, culture and community. AND when you're done, check out @turshen and her podcast and general awesomeness 😎
Today's podcast rec: soil health and public health. Fascinating convo about why all doctors also have to be ecologists and why the biodiversity we can't see (and therefore don't think about) in the soil and your gut is so important
This week on The Doctor’s Farmacy, soil expert @drdaphnemiller joined me to discuss why we need to acknowledge soil as a major influence on the food system and our health and most importantly what we can do to change soil composition for the better. https://t.co/2BF6PIhhp6
While we finalize our last episode, we're sharing some other podcasts:
This episode about #community organizing & #spirituality is so powerful, esp asking how we name strong, demanding love in public and use it to build collective power #socialjustice#MondayMotivation
In a world of division, community organizers @RamiNashashibi and @LucasLJohnson say despair is not an option — and that the work of social healing requires us to get “proximate to pain.” https://t.co/pFpvbnHqxX
It's confusing AF even for us and we study nutrition! To add another layer check this out: @marionnestle talks about how pervasive industry-funded research is around eggs and cholesterol (and all foods) in her book #UnsavoryTruth, it's a fascinating read
It's too simplistic to view charity as just a "band-aid." Charity is important, but it's a problem when it becomes part of the system itself. We must fight for equity and justice - in the food system and in all systems. #socialjustice#foodjustice
Take your pick: Should we cover more news? Would you be annoyed if we ate food on the show? Do we use too much jargon? What do you want to know from our guests?
We need your help to make the podcast better 😁 reply or DM us
We talk about fair-labor labels in our last episode, bc we were surprised at how little of your food 💵 gets back to growers. Maybe labels could help. #foodjustice#SocialJustice#farmworkers
Check out episode 6!
There are lots of labels that certify how food is grown: organic, non-GMO, certified grass fed. The @FoodJusticeCert label instead focuses on the people, guaranteeing how the people producing it are treated. https://t.co/go96IB27hw via @CivilEats#foodjustice
This photographer shows off produce: bright, carefully arranged citrus; sliced-open avocados; pints of blueberries from the farmers’ market—all showcased in on her Instagram feed, where she also shares details about the people behind the food. https://t.co/huDhS6FmRg
Hey fam! We're wrapping up our pilot season (last episode featuring Adante's interview with @ZwelisFlavors dropping soon)
In the meantime, we need your help! What's have you learned? How's the length of the episodes? The grocery bag? What can we improve? #TuesdayThoughts
Over here in grad school too. Food security is a real problem for all students, esp if you've got a family and are trying to pay for health insurance ON TOP of tuition and expenses (expand Medicaid NC, plz thx).
Why do you think we'll attend any event for free food
This a real problem at state and community colleges: “Hunger can force students to drop out of school to work more, which inhibits academic success” Tuition or Dinner? Nearly Half of College Students Surveyed in a New Report Are Going Hungry https://t.co/D5erTx1Fey
Were the people who grew your food - or brought it to you or cooked it - were they treated right? We touch on this in our last episode, taking about the share of your food dollar that actually makes it back to growers.
Do you think an economic justice label would work?
@WAGEpodcast recently was told that the wait time for this brunch place in VA Beach was 1 1/2 - 2 hours. We stayed and it was well worth the wait. The outside “wait” bar they had certainly helped make it worth it lol
Also love this quote: "I’m not the first to say this, but food is an amazing, incredible organizing instrument. Everybody eats. Because everybody eats, there’s room for an important conversation to take place." @thegardengriot is full of gems 😉 and everyone should read her book
"The work that we’re doing today has existed before. We’ve used agriculture as a tool, an instrument, and this is our way to pick up that baton and be curious for the next generation. Self-provisioning allows us to believe that we can be free."

Adante and @khrisnicholas did just have to explain what @Publix was to @allilacko on the last episode (who still doesn't get it and Publix is only 15 miles away - WHO drives 40 miles to get groceries?! Whyyy, grocery shopper you have so much to live for closer to home)
