A key to development success? Join the pieces of the puzzle. In Balk District, this means linking farmers with grain markets: from production through transport to sales and higher incomes. Made possible by support from @JapaninAFG.
It was deeply moving and a rare privilege to see the historic Haji Piyada Mosque, in Balkh province. Dating back to the 9th century or earlier, this is the oldest Islamic bulding in Afghanistan and possibly Central Asia. An important part of world heritage.
This is how enterprise, exports & inclusive employment work: a third-generation Afghan company exporting thousands of tons of raisins to India & other markets, expanding into melon seeds, with women actively engaged. Made possible with support from @EUinAfghanistan.
“Love is an ocean with such a vast space, no wise man can swim it in any place.”
Visiting the tomb of Rabia Balkhi, one of the earliest women poets of Persian literature, and the nearby Green Mosque, was a chance to reflect on Balkh’s remarkable literary & cultural legacy.
Visiting Noor Rostayee Carpet Factory in Jawzjan, I saw how keeping the entire production process ‘from sheep to shop’ here in AFG creates greater value for producers. This means better prices, higher incomes, more jobs & stronger Afghan exports. This is what success looks like.

A special moment visiting the birthplace of Mawlana Jalaluddin Balkhi in historic Balkh, whose words continue to inspire people across cultures and generations.

On my first trip to northern Afg, I met farmers in Hesarak village, Balkh, benefiting from a @JapaninAFG-funded project connecting irrigation, orchards, fish farming, rural roads & market dev. A reminder that development works best when communities’ needs are addressed together.
Seeing @UNDP’s @alexanderdecroo and @Refugees’ @BarhamSalih meet Afghan 🇦🇫 UN Volunteers firsthand shows the unique value national volunteers bring to the @UN.
With deep local knowledge & trusted relationships, they open doors and connect the UN with the people it serves.
At TAK Dry Fruit in Mazar-e-Sharif, I saw how @UNDP’s ecosystem approach creates jobs across the economy.
Here, support to farmers, local infrastructure & private enterprise is helping this business grow and employ over 300 women.
This is what investment in recovery looks like.
UNHCR is saving lives.
@UNDP is giving people a future.
We need to do both.
My joint message with @BarhamSalih, High Commissioner of @Refugees, in Afghanistan.
Protection and development must work together from the very start.
That is how communities move beyond crisis.
Women-led businesses are central to economic growth and inclusion. Removing barriers and expanding access to markets and finance is one of the most effective ways to boost their resilience. Proud to be part of UNDP's work in this vital field. https://t.co/7XPV03XrDz

As climate change worsens water stress, water tables recede in many parts of the world. Trying to get natural water systems flowing again in Afghanistan by combining centuries-old karazes - underground water canals - with today's water science+tech. James Hendina, @UNDPaf area manager for Kandahar, Helmand, Nimroz, Uruzgan, and Zabul, explains how: https://t.co/tG0CQwBikO

I was pleased to welcome @UNDPaf Representative and @JapaninAFG who visited Northern region to observe @UNDP's work supporting women's economic empowerment through MSMEs. They witnessed how programme is enabling women-led businesses to thrive and contribute to local economies.
.@UNDPaf's Res Rep @sarodriques & @JapaninAFG Amb H.E. KUROMIYA visited UNDP initiatives supporting women entrepreneurs in Balkh. They met local women biz owners & appreciated their resilience. Since 2021, UNDP has supported 75K+ MSMEs, with d @JapanGov being 1 of d main donors.
