RECAP on PlayStation phasing out physical media by January 2028, and rightful pushback🚀

✅Sony announced that they won’t be issuing physical discs for games from January 2028 and beyond.

✅They also announced permanent shut down of PS3 and PS Vita stores from late 2026 to July 2027 (depending on region).

✅Massive outrage ensued, driven by concerns over game ownership and the very likely threat of games being removed and players paying a full purchase price when it’s technically just a license that can be revoked at any time without compensation.

✅PlayStation went completely silence for almost 96 hours now, with no posts on social media

✅Sony is facing multiple lawsuits over accusations of monopoly

✅Outrage persisted with people sharing their love for physical media and showing their collections of game discs from different eras, with many cancelling PlayStation Plus and their digital pre-orders of GTA6 and the likes

✅Conversation spread out across the world/mediums, gaining massive support and endless criticism of Sony’s strategy from companies, small studios, politicians, celebrities..etc condemning the move and calling for overturn of the decision

✅Sony became the subject of ridicule and comedy by various companies and players

✅It was reported that Sony was planning this for long and repurposing their manufacturers of game discs to make micro-lenses instead

✅Reports of an internal message from Sony to its partners claims that Sony would continue to release games released before January 2028 on physical disc, while games released after that will be a code in the box

✅PlayStation, who featured GTA6 on their X/Twitter banner and their PlayStation app icon removed said promo imagery yesterday

✅“Plays Best on PS5” marketing is claimed not to appear on Rockstar’s social media pages, with some claiming that Rockstar may have distanced itself from PlayStation likely due to the fact that GTA6 will be digital only, and has been strongly associated with Sony’s marketing and the outrage regarding phasing out physical media

✅Various sources reported that Sony internally did not anticipate such massive outrage that is unlike anything before

✅Hideo Kojima expressed disappointment regarding the loss of physical media yesterday, and he has expressed concerns over media ownership and access now, and back in 2021, a post which has resurfaced and gone viral with recent events jumping from 2K to over 27K reports in a day

No official statement has been made as of this moment regarding what’s next, but this is beyond just an internet bubble being upset.

This is a cultural shift that impacts the whole entertainment industry in terms of media distribution, ownership, pricing, competition, second hand market and monopoly, dynamic pricing and lack of healthy competition and alternatives for players.
