HBO's Lanterns target audience isn't fans of Green Lantern comics or media. Its target audience is fans of detective shows and "prestige" tv. It's ashamed of being a show about superheroes. It wants to appear as "mature", and comes off as petulantly childish.

@mxmacabre It's both that, and for some reason white trad catholics that are very openly bigoted against other religions. Because HBO's Hal is "a good christian man", unlike what he is in the comics (canonically jewish) since the comics are "evil" for making him anything but catholic

@alicekr00s coincidentally used by John who is meant to be taken as the counterpart to Hal. Doesn't diminish the message Hal's dialogue brings, which is particularly harmful if you don't criticize it and instead take it at face value

it's so stupid that Lanterns' writers thought fans would be upset about the ending and not about how they ruined Hal Jordan by turning him into a corrupt xenophobic cop. or maybe they are too white to notice that's what they did.

I don't think it's any coincidence that in HBO's Lanterns Tom King is partially responsible for a script in which immigrants are depicted as "illegal" aliens who are way too excited to self immolate via turning themselves into a bomb. I don't think it's a coincidence at all.

I don't think it's casual or a coincidence that HBO's Lanterns show has an all white male writers' room that's recreating the far right conspiracy theory of the great replacement. It's the second Gunn project that does this. First Superman, now Green Lantern.

But at least Superman had the decency to be entertaining! It was fun! HBO's Lanterns is just dreadful. A try hard attempt at being edgy, relying heavily on shock value. Wouldn't be surprised if it's revealed Hal offed himself, since that's what King loves to do.
