Una mujer octogenaria con Alzheimer avanzado recuperó temporalmente, durante varias semanas, funciones como el habla, la continencia urinaria y la autonomía motora tras ingerir una alta dosis de hongos con psilocibina.

La paciente, una mujer japonesa-estadounidense de unos 80 años con 10 años de diagnóstico de Alzheimer (los últimos 5 años en estado muy avanzado), presentaba un cuadro grave: hablaba casi solo con monosílabos, tenía incontinencia urinaria desde hacía años, necesitaba ayuda total para caminar, vestirse y comer, y mostraba nula interacción emocional o social.

Recibió una dosis única de 5 gramos de hongos secos de psilocibina (cepa Enigma, muy potente). Durante las primeras horas presentó activación autonómica intensa, sudoración profusa y un sueño profundo prolongado. Aproximadamente 19 horas después, comenzó a hablar espontáneamente de su vida con frases completas y coherentes.

En los días siguientes recuperó la continencia urinaria, empezó a caminar con mayor autonomía, se vestía sola, mostraba emociones (sonreía, reía), interactuaba socialmente y recordaba detalles recientes.

Un mes después se le dio una segunda dosis de 3 g que reforzó las mejoras. Las ganancias duraron varias semanas antes de volver gradualmente al estado basal.

La psilocibina actúa principalmente como agonista de los receptores 5-HT2A de serotonina, lo que provoca una desorganización temporal de las redes cerebrales a gran escala. En la enfermedad de Alzheimer avanzada, las redes neuronales se vuelven rígidas y fragmentadas. La psilocibina reduce esta rigidez, aumenta la integración global entre regiones cerebrales y promueve un estado de mayor plasticidad sináptica. Esto podría haber permitido el acceso temporal a circuitos neuronales residuales que aún existían pero estaban “apagados” o desconectados por la patología. Además, se observó un sueño profundo prolongado que podría haber facilitado procesos de consolidación y reorganización cerebral.

Este caso sugiere que incluso en etapas avanzadas de Alzheimer puede existir reserva funcional oculta que la psilocibina es capaz de desbloquear temporalmente mediante neuromodulación y plasticidad.

If you're worried about ticks, put up an owl box.

The animal driving most Lyme disease in the eastern US is the white-footed mouse. Ticks that feed on them are far more likely to come away infected than ticks that feed on other animals. The bigger the local mouse population, the worse the next year's tick year.

A single barred owl pair raising chicks can take hundreds of rodents in a breeding season. Owls also don't carry Lyme. The bacterium can't survive their digestive tract, so an owl that eats an infected mouse is a dead end for the disease.

Researchers at the Cary Institute, the leading lab on Lyme ecology, have been explicit about this: "Landscapes that support predators have reduced Lyme disease risk."

One owl box on its own isn't going to fix a tick year. But a yard with owls, foxes, bobcats, and weasels in it has fewer mice, and a yard with fewer mice has fewer infected ticks.

If you have woods or fields nearby, a properly sized barn owl or screech owl box (different species, different boxes) is one of the most useful single things you can do for tick exposure at the landscape scale. Match the box to the owl that lives near you.

The mouse is the problem, owls are the solution.

The olive tree is not just the modern symbol of the Palestinians and their deep roots in the soil of their land, it was always central to their history and economy. Along with cotton, which the Palestinians exported to Marseilles, olive oil and olive soap were major export industries in the early Ottoman period, a reflection of the astonishing number amount of olive trees growing between Jerusalem and Nablus. The trees were divided into rumani- the big, old spreading ones that dated back to Byzantine times and so were most fruiful- and the more youthful islami ones, those planted under Muslim rule, so younger and therefore less productive and taxed at a lower rate. Camels carried the oil into town, each one carrying a load of four vessels, while soap was carried out. The Ottomans taxed camels moving in both directions. There were at least twelve olive oil soap factories operating in Jerusalem under the Mamluks. Under early Ottoman rule, the Jerusalem economy greatly enlarged, well-organised guilds were set up and yet more soap factories were built. The Janisseries in the Citadel and the 'ulama of the al-Aqsa were both heavily invested in the trade. By the 18thC, the making of olive oil soap had partly migrated to Nablus, which along with Acre became the richest city in the region, largely on the proceeds.
