When scholarship athletes show up on campus, they get first pick of their jersey number — and with it, the matching equipment locker. Walk-ons? You’re assigned a number and placed in the 100s. It’s a subtle reminder of where you stand.

I was given #4 and locker 114. Every time I bent down to grab my gear, it reminded me: you’ve got work to do.
Eventually, after earning a starting spot in the lineup, our equipment staff Milt and JP asked if I wanted to move into the official #4 locker. My answer? “No — I’ll keep 114.”

That locker became more than a space. It was my symbol. A daily reminder of where I started, and the hunger it takes to keep climbing.
