This June, high school students got a head start on careers in medicine during a dynamic, hands-on event hosted at @UNRLakeTahoe. The event, called PA Student Success (P.A.S.S.), was a partnership between the @unrmed Physician Assistant Studies program and Upward Bound.
Over the course of a day, students rotated through stations focused on clinical fundamentals like anatomy, ultrasound technology and blood pressure measuring. For many, it was their first real glimpse into the world of medicine — and into a career they may not have even known existed. https://t.co/0t32Q6fbqV
The college access and opportunity community needs your support. Federal TRIO programs are essential, as they change lives and have immeasurable benefits for our communities. We must remind our members of Congress about this.
A thread of thoughts that are purely my own:
As a college access and opportunity professional, today has been a rollercoaster of emotions; a day filled of anxiety, uncertainty, and unease.
e always been resilient in the face of adversity.
Unfortunately, we cannot do this alone. Today, and the continued fight ahead, has been a testament to one of my favorite quotes by Helen Keller: “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”
To all the First Generation college students and their families, we thank you for dreaming and for your perseverance.
We are a better country for it. Happy First Gen College Day!
This week is First-Generation Celebration Week, a time to bring awareness to and uplift first-generation students at the @unevadareno. The University's First-Generation Student Center does amazing work in ensuring that first-gen students are set up for success, both during their time on campus and upon graduation. #GoPack
Take a listen to this week’s Sagebrushers podcast and hear about all of the wonderful things happening in the First-Generation Student Center here at Nevada from our amazing Executive Director! #TRIOworks! 🐺💙
In this episode of the #Sagebrushers podcast, Executive Director of the First-Generation Student Center Ellen Houston and @Pres_Sandoval join together to discuss resources geared toward first-generation students.
Beginning her work as Director at the @unevadareno in 1997, Houston graduated with a bachelor’s in Journalism from the University as a first-generation student in 1992. She then went on to earn her master’s in Counseling and Educational Psychology from the University as well. Since then, she has focused on ensuring that first-generation students build a positive foundation at the University. Houston is a strong believer that education is a powerful tool in breaking the generational cycle of poverty.
President Sandoval and Houston discuss the Upward Bound Programs, the PAC program and other benefits offered to first-generation students in this episode. Listen now at https://t.co/36GaFSkcFx

What’s my favorite part of the year, you may ask? Seeing our highly-motivated, first-generation students cross the stage and graduate!
This year, UNR UB/UBMS has 54 students graduating and we are celebrating their successes today! #TRIOworks!
Congratulations to Dr. @JafethEvelyn Sanchez, associate professor of educational leadership and director of the Latino Research Center, for receiving the AERA Latina/o/x SIG Elementary, Secondary and Post-Secondary Award yesterday!

This year, we are asking for our network’s support by becoming a changemaker and donating to UB/UBMS! From calculators to college tours, the impact of your donation will directly impact our community of highly motivated, first-generation scholars and leaders. 🌟
Each year, UB/UBMS provides academic advising, college preparatory workshops, tutoring and literacy support, college planning and exploration, residential summer academy, nationwide college tours, leadership development, and service learning all at absolutely no cost. 👏🏼
Thank you for your continued support of TRIO programs and for hosting our delegation at the Capitol today! Your UNR TRIO family are very proud of all of your successes. Go pack! #COEPS2024#TRIOworks
I had the pleasure of meeting with the TRIO program students from Nevada during their visit to DC.
As an alum, I know the program's impact to overcome barriers to education firsthand.
I'm excited to see how these students will use the talents & resources TRIO provides.
