As the Chinese scam industry spreads beyond Asia’s fortified compounds, it’s become cheaper and easier to run — thanks to AI — and harder to kill. https://t.co/HZfXp6Bsei
there is an argument (which I've made privately until now) that one of the principal innovations of the large language model labs is a *legal* innovation, not a technical one
by building a system that hoovers up mind-bogglingly large volumes of human information and feeds it into a recombinatorial association machine, the companies have bulldozed the existing IP regime and made the contents of ~all human IP (including the most mundane) searchable, reconfigurable, and usable while also obscuring any trace of origin and eliminating a need to provide credit or attribution. much of the perceived benefit is therefore access and exposure to IP people would not otherwise have had access to, presented behind a system that abstracts the IP from its context and history and presents it as net-new information.
I imagine we would have seen ~similar productivity outcomes had Google actually been allowed to make productive use of the Google Books database over a decade ago.
@HedgieMarkets Reminds me of Elizabeth Holmes claiming Theranos’s machines could run hundreds of blood tests from a few drops. Behind the scenes, the company was running most tests on other companies’ conventional lab equipment. The results made it look like the promised technology worked.
[seeking investors]: so we've invented a machine that dilutes all of human creative endeavour, so that, someday soon, nothing will have the capacity to provoke wonder; that we hope will render every task futile and joyless; and the good news is, we also expect it to kill us all
Complaining is a way of feeling better about staying stuck. It's emotional methadone. It soothes you just enough that you never actually move. But the moment you take responsibility your mind starts generating options. Blame gives you zero moves, ownership gives you a menu.
The strongest red flag was when leftists lost the ability to be funny. Comedy relies on subverting expectations to expose truth. Leftism subverts the truth to peddle lies. That’s why they can’t be funny, they can’t reveal the truth, their entire politics depends on concealing it.
The man who produced Johnny Cash, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Adele explains why Hollywood keeps making soulless movies:
"The audience comes last. I'm not making it for them, I'm making it for me."
"When you make something truly for yourself, you're doing the best thing you possibly can for the audience."
"So many big movies are just not good because they're being made by people trying to make something they think someone else is going to like. That's not how art works. That's commerce."
"Everything we make as artists are essentially diary entries."
Augustine had a word for the vice of the internet age: curiositas. It doesn't mean "curiosity", but rather a disordered desire for knowing stuff regardless of its real value. It is the intellectual twin of bodily lust—the following of ephemeral passions without regard for consequences or what they're leading to. It's the act of knowing stuff as a form of possession; as if knowing everything that the latest Dwarkesh podcast guest had to say has any real value in itself.
The problem with the Onion’s takeover of Infowars is that left-wing satire is structurally impossible
Satire relies on mocking commonly observed social patterns, and the entire epistemology of leftism rests on denying that such things exist
I welcome the Supreme Court's correct decision. The left has spent decades hiding their racial obsession behind the banner of civil rights. Today, that game ends.
Racial gerrymandering is not protection. It is the left's plantation politics repackaged with a law degree. The condescending assumption that Black Americans cannot compete without bureaucrats drawing lines around them is not compassion. It is racism with different branding. I am a Black man who has never needed the government to predetermine my outcome. Neither do the voters of this country.
The left claims to champion equality while demanding the government sort every American into a racial box. That is not a civil rights movement. That is a power grab dressed up as one. We cannot become a more perfect union if Democrats continue to treat race as a weapon and black voters as a captive constituency to be managed and mobilized.
Everyone who is a citizen of this great country should first and foremost be an AMERICAN. Regardless of race, religion, zip code, or income, we are all Americans and should be treated as such. The left has never believed that. Today's ruling says they no longer get to act like it.
