4 June 1915. Third Battle of Krithia. The 6th Manchesters advance from Ardwick Green. Three remarkable images from that day, in the collection of – perhaps taken by – Alec Riley.

#Gallipoli
For more than fourteen years, I have had the privilege of serving on behalf of the @CWGC in Türkiye, caring for some of the world’s most significant sites of remembrance.
Among them, few places carry the enduring historical, cultural, and emotional significance of Gallipoli.
For Australians and New Zealanders, the ANZAC story remains a defining chapter in the development of national identity. For Türkiye, Çanakkale stands as a testament to resilience, sacrifice, and the determination of a nation in the making. Yet Gallipoli’s greatest legacy may lie beyond the battlefield itself.
More than a century after the events of 1915, the Gallipoli Peninsula continues to unite people from different nations, cultures, and generations. What was once a place of conflict has become a place of understanding. What was once a battlefield has become one of the world’s most powerful landscapes of reconciliation.
The responsibility entrusted to the CWGC is therefore far greater than the maintenance of cemeteries and memorials. Our mission is to preserve memory itself—to ensure that every individual commemorated in our care continues to be remembered with dignity, respect, and humanity for generations to come.
Every headstone, every memorial inscription, every carefully maintained pathway tells a story. Together, they form a lasting bridge between the past and the present, reminding us that the human cost of war must never be forgotten.
Those of us who work in Gallipoli are conscious that we are custodians of something profoundly important. We are privileged to protect the memory of the men commemorated here and to welcome the families, descendants, veterans, students, and visitors who travel from across the world seeking connection with their history.
In doing so, we are also privileged to uphold one of the most remarkable legacies associated with these shores: the spirit of respect, compassion, and reconciliation embodied by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. His message to the mothers of the fallen remains one of the most powerful expressions of humanity to emerge from the aftermath of war and continues to shape the unique relationship shared between Türkiye, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.
As custodians of these sacred places, we take immense pride in ensuring that the memory of those who are commemorated here endures. Their stories continue to educate, their sacrifice continues to inspire, and their legacy continues to strengthen bonds between nations that were once divided by conflict.
That is the enduring importance of Gallipoli.
And that is the enduring purpose of remembrance.

@SteKelly198586 I wonder how much control and decision he had over those signings and whether much of it was done by committee. Trying to shape a side after so many changes etc couldn't have been easy
@SteKelly198586 Completely agree. If he wanted to stay he would have signed a fair deal with extras or whatever. He didn't, so let him go. It's what he wants. No point keeping someone who doesn't want to stay.
@SteKelly198586 He's kept quiet for a reason, he saw the crap that Trent got and doesn't want any of that. Personally he seems an accident waiting to happen in most games. His best games were just after his return from bereavement leave. I'm not fussed if he is going.
The 1998 Khaki Chums Army Cyclist Corps Tour saw nine of us pedalling replica MkIV Army Bicycles from Nieuwpoort to the Ypres Salient and back on, what was then, the hottest recorded Belgian week in 100 years in full Great War ACC kit.
One night we slept, in the open, on top of the Ramparts, next to the Menin Gate. The mosquitos were busy while we were asleep and we were all well and truly bitten.
A particularly creative mozzy posse left my T G initials bitten into my forehead.
In celebration of my 60th birthday today, Chumrade Jack Johnson has created this numeric mozzie masterpiece…

Thank you for your comments and for caring so deeply about these sites.
We are truly sorry for the condition you have seen — we fully understand your concern and share your disappointment. Due to a number of recent operational challenges affecting our maintenance programme, we have regrettably not been able to meet the standards we set for ourselves during this period.
We have a strong track record of maintaining high standards in Türkiye, and we remain fully committed to continuing this.
Please be assured that our teams are working with full dedication to restore the cemeteries to the respectful and dignified condition they deserve. This remains our absolute priority.
We sincerely appreciate your patience, understanding, and continued support.
