The ANC says suspended National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola failed to uphold his constitutional duty by implementing Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s directive to impose a moratorium on appointments within Crime Intelligence.

Mchunu issued the directive on 31 December 2024, ordering that processes to fill vacant Crime Intelligence posts be halted pending discussions with the National Commissioner. The directive also ordered the immediate disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).
