The Mer de Glace on Mont Blanc. A vintage photo from the early 1900s and the current webcam image. The glacier has been in a regressive phase since 1850 but the melting has accelerated rapidly over the last 20 years due to ever higher temperatures and the summer increase of the freezing point.

In the last few days, in that area, the freezing point has reached an altitude of 5,200 meters, an absolutely abnormal figure and well above the average. In fact, in summer the freezing level in the western Alpine Arc should be around 3,500-3,600 metres.

Realising that I don’t want to do academia longterm has been transformative for my PhD. Removing the need to subscribe to traditional academic success metrics has given me scope to take a far more holistic approach to my scientific development.
