Periodic reminder that stimming is functional, with movement stims often serving both attentional and motor developmental purposes! https://t.co/JLNibWtB0e
Hi, #PTTwitter! Especially California PT’s!
Want to earn CEU’s and improve care for #Autistic patients (and did you know you’re already seeing many)?
“#Neurodiversity-Affirming PT Care for Autistic Adults” is now approved for 1.15 CEU’s in California:

If someone’s facial expressions, body language, posture, volume, tone of voice, speed or rhythm of speech, or mode of communication do not match up with your expectations, consider that what you are observing are differences in sensorimotor control, and NOT “social deficits.”
There is a lack of funding for research on effective provision of healthcare for autistic adults: newly published article by TA McDonald and Audrey Scudder: https://t.co/9mm1XxKLvp

I'm finding I'm constantly being misquoted on #Neurodiversity, based on Wikipedia nonsense and people who just "make it up" on the fly, too often falling back into the #MedicalModel that my work critiqued! In future pls use the citations in this thread. https://t.co/cS1LMhvgHT
@TicsnTatts As an autistic PT who works with patients with movement disorders like Parkinson’s, I really really believe autistic movement differences are widely misinterpreted by clinicians as so many other things
@TicsnTatts Kind of tangentially related, there needs to be more research on this but there was a 2021 study indicating that tics are often misidentified as stims by physicians which I totally believe happens a lot: https://t.co/LJqDgzyf3N
@mightbeautistic Both autism and ADHD are differences from the “norm” in the rhythm and scaling of brain functions. Our culture defines these dx depending on which brain functions are most noticeably different in rhythm/scaling as compared to a society’s “norm”
“High-functioning #ActuallyAutistic self-advocates want to erase #profoundautism!” Have you heard this frequently stated lie? It stems from a HUGE misunderstanding of #neurodiversity, which has fueled a manufactured, unnecessary “war” btwn #autism parents & #autistic adults. /1
Medical model vs social model of disability: what we communicate to our patients
"What do we need to change about you in order for you to be able to do what you want/need to do?"
vs
"What do you need in order to be able to do what you want/need to do?"
Listen. Being chronically I’ll and neurodivergent fucking SUCKS a lot of the time. But I’m absolutely a better clinician because of it. I know what it’s like to suffer without answers so I make sure my patients feel heard and validated every step of the way
@DrMarciaPT@LSchneiderPT@AlexisMLeveille Right! It is BOTH often a necessary part of PT practice to support folks to discover what works well for them (movement, sensory, pacing, support needs) to reduce life stress/downregulate stress responses AND our training does not make us psychologists.
I’d like to remind healthcare professionals and policymakers to consider both the quality of the research evidence and the perspectives of patients receiving interventions when determining whether a service is evidence based. Let’s remember the three pillars of EBP.
