In 1939, five young Black men walked into the public library in Alexandria, Virginia, asked for library cards, were refused, and then simply sat down at the tables and read.

They had rehearsed for weeks. What to wear. How to speak. What to do with their hands.

It is one of the earliest sit-ins in American history — twenty-one years before Greensboro.

The lawyer behind it was Samuel Tucker, who had grown up two blocks from that library, paid the taxes that funded it, and was not allowed inside.

They were arrested for disorderly conduct. Photographs ran in the papers: young men in suits, reading quietly, being led out.

The city's answer was to build a separate small library for Black residents rather than open the one that existed.

Tucker refused to ever use it. He wrote to the city that he would not accept a segregated library card, and he never took one.

The library is named after him now.

Five men in good suits, sitting down with books, and a city that would rather build a whole second building than let them turn a page in the first one.
