BREAKING: Al-Shabaab militants launched a heavy attack on Somali regional forces in Kudhaa Island, 120km south of Kismayo, early Wednesday.

In a statement, the group claimed to have captured the area, but there has been no independent confirmation so far. Jubaland regional administration yet to comment on the attack.

A local resident said there were heavy casualties as a result of the attack.

Kudhaa has been under the control of Jubaland forces for more than ten years and has withstood several attempts by the group to retake it.

The area is rich in fishing resources. During its control prior to 2014, al-Shabaab used Kudhaa to export charcoal despite UN sanctions.
