In 2010, Audemars Piguet collaborated with the legend of Formula 1, Michael Schumacher, to create the Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph Michael Schumacher watch. This collaboration bore fruit in 2015.

Normally, people outside the racetrack follow the lap times with a series of stopwatches placed in sequence. Right after the first stopwatch stops to record the time it takes a car to go around the track, the second stopwatch would be used for the next lap. However, what if there was only one watch?

Many people would probably think of a split-seconds chronograph, the rattrapante watch we know, or the Double Split at A Lange & Sohne for example. However, these watches have the disadvantage of not being able to time consecutive laps. To do that, you would need to stop, reset and restart the stopwatch (which would waste precious time having to press multiple buttons). The above problem is solved with a flyback chronograph with just a blink of an eye.

Combining both the “rattrapante” and “flyback chronograph” we have the solution to racer Michael Schumacher’s question from years ago, or more precisely Audemars Piguet has the answer for themselves. This is exactly what the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher demonstrates.

Complexity only found in the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher When launched, the Royal Oak Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher was the only split-seconds chronograph with two seconds hands controlled independently via three pushers. Two of these pushers will not surprise watch fans too much: the first at the 2 o'clock position is used to start and pause the stopwatch while the second at the 4 o'clock position is used to reset the stopwatch to 0. However, there is a third pusher on the other side of the case, at the 9 o'clock position. This is what makes the Royal Oak Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher special.
