The hard truth about mass deportations is that they would almost certainly be met with resistance so widespread and persistent it would plunge the country into a state of sustained civil conflict.

That's not a reason not to do it, simply an acknowledgment of where we are.

Given the insane reaction in Minneapolis to what was in truth a rather mild attempt to enforce federal immigration law, we should expect mass deportations to trigger a reaction considerably more unhinged and violent.

No one wants to see that level of conflict in American cities and communities, but it's probably the only way to save the country at this point.
