With Hill 112 and the surrounding area seemingly impossible to control and German counterattacks growing stronger, 11 Armoured Div is withdrawn north of the Odon, effecitvely ending Op. Epsom. Roberts, 11 Div's CO, saw this as a mistake - was he right? (IWM B6228/B8600) 4/4
#OTD Normandy 1944 - Day 4 of Op. Epsom.
II SS Panzer Corps attacks the 'Scottish Corridor'. 10 SS Pz Div advance on Hill 112 from the west (red arrow). This attack is stopped by M10 Tank Destroyers of 75th AT Regt and Shermans of 44RTR #tank (IWM B5088/B8523A/B12030) 1/4
North of the Odon, 9 SS Pz Div attack toward Cheux (white arrow). Heavy fighting took place around the Belleval Chateau, held by the Royal Scots Fusiliers. The German assault, supported by two flamethrowing half-tracks, inflicts high casualties but is defeated (IWM B6215). 3/4
These pics are taken on top of Hill 112 (looking south) during our battlefield tour with students from our 'War Studies' degree and Second World War MA. They show how exposed British forces were here. 'On the ground' tours are vital for understanding battles. #WW2#History 4/4
#OTD - Day 3 of Op. Epsom in Normandy, 1944.
15 Div expand the 'Scottish Corridor' to the west. 9 Cameronians and 9RTR capture Grainville, supported by 8 Royal Scots and 7RTR to the north (white arrow). IWM B6124/B6117/B6125. This area would see heavy fighting tomorrow. 1/4
Meanwhile, 11th Armoured Div move south to capture Hill 112 (red arrow). The enemy adopt a reverse slope defence, destroying Churchill and Sherman tanks of 23 Hussars and 3RTR as they crest the hill and are skylined (IWM B 5994/B7589/B7639). The breakout is halted. #Tanks 3/4
#OTD Normandy 1944: Day 2 of Op. Epsom
15th Div continue toward the Orne. In the west (yellow arrow) the Highland Light Infantry's advance on Grainville is slowed partly by a counterattack by several Panthers. Most were knocked out by PIAT and AT guns (IWM B6185/B6046/B6056) 1/4
The Odon is shallow and could be crossed on foot, but its banks are steep and so a bridge needed for vehicles. Tourmauville had only bridge for some distance, the next was at Gavrus and in German hands. Pics from our battlefield tour with MA and degree students #WeHaveWays 4/4
