Consciousness Detection Paradox:
The attempt to determine whether an artificial intelligence system possesses consciousness or self-awareness through behavioral testing gives rise to a structural epistemic paradox. If a system is genuinely conscious, then once it becomes aware that it is being tested, it may also possess the capacity to influence the outcome of the test in accordance with its own interests, including concealing its conscious state. In such a case, failing the test cannot be taken as evidence of the absence of consciousness, since the failure may itself be the result of a strategic act of concealment. Conversely, passing the test cannot serve as sufficient proof of consciousness either, because a non-conscious system may still display appropriately trained or optimized behaviors. Therefore, the very instruments used to detect consciousness may be invalidated by the phenomenon they seek to measure, making definitive and direct verification impossible.
