By the 1920s, the rabbit population was estimated to have reached 10 billion. They stripped vegetation, accelerated soil erosion, devastated crops, and competed with native wildlife for food and habitat. Over the years, authorities tried fencing, trapping, poisoning, shooting, and biological control programs, but rabbits remain a major invasive species.

It remains one of history’s clearest examples of how a single human decision, made for recreation, can transform an entire ecosystem.

A 2022 genetic study confirmed that Australia’s widespread rabbit population can be traced largely to Austin’s 1859 release, showing that this single introduction played a central role in the invasion.
