Until yesterday, the political atmosphere was saturated with revolutionary machismo, rhetorical chest thumping, and unrestrained belligerence. The declarations were thunderous: "Tera baap bhi dega, tera baap bhi nahi rok sakta, kisi ka baap bhi nahi laga sakta, Somnath ki tarah hamlay karenge, 20 lakh log hain, pehli goli main khaunga, in mein itni himmat nahi, himmat hai tou laga kar dikhao."

Every speech was an invitation to confrontation, every slogan a proclamation of invincibility, and every political gathering an occasion for premature declarations of victory.

Yet the moment the opposing power structure translates its authority into concrete action, the entire rhetoric undergoes a remarkable transformation. Yesterday's self-proclaimed conquerors suddenly rediscover the vocabulary of victimhood.

Now comes the moral sermonising: "Kamzoron ke saath kharay hona chahiye, kamzoron par tanqeed nahi karte, mazloom ka saath dena chahiye, taqatwar ke samne bolna asaan nahi hota."

Bhai, pehle yeh tou faisla kar lo ke aap ho kaun? Taqatwar ya kamzor? Fateh ya mazloom? Inqilab ke alam bardar ya halaat ke haathon majboor?

You cannot wear the crown of a conqueror one day and demand the sympathy reserved for the vanquished the next. If you possess the formidable political strength you so relentlessly proclaimed, why this sudden descent into collective lamentation?

Woh 20 lakh log kahan gaye? Woh Somnath par hamlay ka azm kahan gaya? Woh pehli goli khanay walay revolutionaries ab kahan hain?

And if you were politically vulnerable all along, why did you cultivate such extravagant illusions of invincibility among your supporters?

Political bravado and perpetual victimhood cannot serve as interchangeable identities whenever circumstances become inconvenient.

And spare us the performance of newly discovered innocence.

Was anyone genuinely unaware of how parliamentary majorities are manipulated in Pakistan? How political loyalties are rearranged? How legislators are pressured, persuaded, or allegedly made to disappear? How criminal proceedings can become instruments of political coercion? Or which corridors of unelected power must sometimes be navigated to gain admission to the chambers of elected authority?

Is any of this unprecedented? Was Pakistan established yesterday? Or does political memory undergo a convenient factory reset every time the balance of power shifts?

Were you not once beneficiaries of the very power structure whose coercive capabilities you now profess to find so astonishing? Were you unfamiliar with its capacity to influence parliamentary arithmetic, engineer legislative outcomes, facilitate prosecutions, and produce judicial decisions with remarkable expediency? Have you forgotten the political circumstances in which verdicts could arrive with astonishing speed, accompanied by celebratory gulab jamun?

You were hardly strangers to the machinery of power when its wheels were turning in your favour. Why, then, this sudden performance of bewilderment when the same machinery begins operating against you?

This brings us to the fundamental question of political responsibility: If the nature of this power structure was already understood, why was that reality conspicuously absent from your political calculations?

If a political party benefited from the patronage or intervention of the very powerful institutions it now holds responsible for its predicament, did it raise any principled objections to the concentration of unelected authority while enjoying the privileges of office? If it did, where is the tangible evidence of institutional resistance or meaningful reform? And if it did not, how much of today's indignation represents a genuine commitment to constitutional democracy, and how much is simply the bitterness of having lost access to power?

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗠𝗙'𝘀 𝗢𝘄𝗻 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁:

▪️ Programme implementation remained broadly on track, despite a challenging external environment.

▪️ Strong policies helped preserve macroeconomic stability, including through the impact of the Middle East conflict.

▪️ Foreign exchange reserves reached approximately US$21.5 billion by end-September 2026.

▪️ The current account remained broadly balanced in FY26, supported by strong remittance inflows.

▪️ Sovereign rating upgrades and renewed international market access point to stronger policy credibility.

▪️ Health and education spending increased from 2.2% of GDP in FY24 to 2.5% in FY26, with a further increase targeted for FY27.

𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀 — 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱

The IMF assessment also recognises continued reform implementation across key areas:

▪️ Public financial management — improving the efficiency and transparency of budgeting, public investment, procurement and government cash management.

▪️ Revenue administration — advancing risk-based audits, digital invoicing and greater use of third-party data.

▪️ Energy-sector reforms — continuing measures to improve financial viability, reduce costs and losses, and increase private participation and competition.

▪️ Climate reforms under the RSF — advancing the integration of climate considerations into public investment and strengthening disaster-risk financing and coordination.

Alongside this progress, the broader structural transformation agenda continues across privatisation, SOE governance, competition, trade and regulatory reforms, governance and deeper financial markets — aimed at raising productivity, private investment, exports and job creation.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲:

Pakistan is demonstrating its ability to withstand external shocks, preserve macroeconomic stability, strengthen institutional credibility and regain international investor confidence.

The IMF's assessment provides important independent recognition that macroeconomic stabilisation is being accompanied by continued reform implementation — while reinforcing the importance of sustaining and deepening this momentum.
