Post 12 of 19 - - > Who to Avoid: People “WITHOUT SELF-CONTROL”
Without self-control is a tricky topic to say the least, because everyone struggles with self-control to some degree, which is a human issue addressed throughout scripture. While exhibiting a lack of self-control generally involves those who seem unable to restrain their impulses, appetites, emotions, or desires, Paul lists this trait to warn us against those who cause harm to others (and one’s self) and displays reckless behaviors in the last days.
Who do we avoid? Modern day examples would include “Compulsive behaviors and additions” (social media, alcohol, drugs, gambling, pornography), “Impulsive Spending” (luxury purchases (or non-essential buys) leading to financial ruin), and “Uncontrolled Social Behavior” (sudden rage, road rage, yelling at friends and family members (parents, grandparents, spouse), and engaging in cancel culture without restraint).
Are you dealing with toxic people in your home, at work, or within your friend circle? Avoid those with obvious dangerous traits like sexual impulsivity, and celebrities, influencers, or everyday people who pursue hedonistic pleasures while promoting an image of wellness or spirituality. Just like in our image below, people who appear to be godly (wears a cross necklace and attends church services), but are people who do ungodly things – divide to control others, and passions rule them.
Pastor Gary Hamrick from Cornerstone Chapel in Leesburg, VA has talked extensively about the cultural climate in the last days and says we are seeing more people without self-control in today’s society. “I think we are seeing that and they are out of control. People say things out of control, they don’t know how to manage themselves, or their lifestyles. We see an out of control culture.”
What’s next?
Pray for those you know, and love who are without self-control. Ask God to guard your heart. Ask Him for discernment to help recognize anyone (including ourselves) that are without self-control. Cast them and your cares, anxieties, and worries, upon Jesus. Do this faithfully and everything will be alright. ✝️🙏🏼❤️
