For years, we’ve talked about how social media can create a misleading picture of the watch industry.

Buying and selling luxury watches is not as simple as many videos make it appear. What you often see online is a highlight reel. Behind those clips are businesses moving millions of dollars in inventory, managing multiple brands, handling customer service, logistics, authentication, sourcing, and after-sales support every day.

Some of the largest dealers in New York and around the world process an incredible number of watches. When you’re handling that volume, mistakes can happen. It doesn’t mean a dealer is dishonest. In many cases, it means they’re operating at a scale where perfection is difficult to achieve on every transaction.

When you see complaints online, it’s important to remember that companies selling hundreds or thousands of watches each year will inevitably face issues from time to time. No reputable dealer wants a damaged, stolen, misrepresented, or non-functioning watch reaching a customer. Especially those who have built their business around trust, transparency, and their public reputation.

While we don’t always agree with certain marketing tactics, including dealers attacking one another for attention, we respect the work that goes into building and operating a successful watch business.

This video was originally made about a year ago when we discussed some of the larger New York watch dealers. The goal wasn’t to criticize anyone. It was to provide perspective on what really happens behind the scenes in the luxury watch industry and why things aren’t always as simple as they appear on social media.

🚨 He did everything right… and still lost $20,000.

A customer purchased a luxury watch and later sent it for authentication. The watch passed inspection and was returned to the seller.

But on the way back, something unexpected happened.

The seller allegedly switched the authentic watch for a counterfeit version and claimed that was the watch he originally received.

The result? A $20,000 loss and a difficult battle to prove what really happened.

This case highlights why documentation, serial verification, photos, videos, and dealing with trusted professionals matter more than ever in today’s luxury watch market.
