Bitcoin’s most profound breakthrough is the ability to convert economic energy into digital form and bind it securely to a person, family, company, machine, or nation.
I made peace a long time ago with one uncomfortable, brutal possibility:
Bitcoin could cost me nearly everything.
A massive percentage of what I’ve spent years building is tied to this conviction.
I’m all in.
If the thesis breaks, the financial damage could be savage.
And I accept that.
Because I would rather absorb a devastating loss pursuing what I genuinely believe is a rare, once-in-a-generation asymmetric opportunity than spend decades watching it succeed while knowing I stayed safely on the sidelines.
I accumulated through the heavy, miserable 2019 market.
I kept buying through the violent wreckage and absolute carnage of 2022.
And I’m still relentlessly adding today.
From the outside, that probably looks irrational, irresponsible, maybe completely reckless.
I have no idea how many wildly overexposed, stubbornly committed, borderline-insane Bitcoin holders are riding this gigantic monetary experiment beside me.
But if you’re one of them,
you’re an absolute legend in my eyess.
"If you're in crypto, pivot to AI."
I used to hear versions of this, and it's the wrong way to think about the world. It's zero sum, scarcity thinking.
Crypto is a general purpose technology. It's infrastructure, the same way electricity or the internet is infrastructure. It doesn't compete with the next big thing, because it underpins it. It's an *and*, not an *or*.
AI being a megatrend takes nothing away from crypto. If anything, it makes crypto more important.
AI agents will need their own financial infrastructure and will eventually transact far more per day than all humans combined. They can't open a bank account, they can't wait three days for a wire, they reside in one country. They need real time programmable money (and that's crypto).
Agents will need to hold funds and pay for things on their own. We pioneered this with the x402 protocol, Base, and USDC, which now power the vast majority of all agentic payments. Agents will also engage in trading and act as a financial advisor. They will raise or borrow money for new projects they are undertaking. They will eliminate tasks for us around tax planning, portfolio rebalancing, and bill pay.
Welcome to the world of Agentic Finance (AiFi). This is what Coinbase is building.
Gold and silver have ONE advantage over Bitcoin:
They've been around longer.
That's it. That's the entire case.
Meanwhile Bitcoin is:
More scarce (21M vs. infinite)
More portable (minutes vs. shipping)
More divisible (sats vs. ounces)
More verifiable (blockchain vs. assay)
Tradition isn't a thesis.
"Bitcoin pays no dividend."
Neither does gold.
Neither does cash.
You're measuring Bitcoin like a stock, but it's not one.
Stocks generate income.
Money preserves purchasing power.
Bitcoin isn't designed to pay you.
It's designed so no one can print more of it.
Money does not exist in nature.
If every human vanished tomorrow—poof, Thanos snap—money dies with us.
Not slowly. Instantly.
Because money isn't real. It's not gravity. It's not water. It's not some fundamental law of physics carved into the universe's source code.
Gravity pulls planets whether you believe in it or not. Water cycles through ecosystems without asking for permission. Those are natural phenomena. They persist.
Money? Money is a shared hallucination. A collective delusion we all agreed to participate in because the alternative, pure barter, was a logistical nightmare.
Look around. Animals hoard food. Birds collect shiny objects to attract mates. Squirrels bury acorns.
But they're not pricing those acorns in "nut dollars." There's no interest rate on stored seeds. No squirrel is taking out a loan to front-run winter scarcity.
That's instinct. That's biology. That's not money.
Money only exists when humans assign value to something and agree that it represents stored labor, future purchasing power, or social coordination at scale.
Without minds to recognize it, gold is just a shiny metal in the ground. Bitcoin is just dormant code on dead servers.
Carl Menger figured this out in the 1870s. Money emerges organically from human action and voluntary agreement—not government decree, not divine mandate.
Gold became money because humans decided it had the right properties: scarce, durable, divisible, portable, verifiable. We built entire civilizations around that consensus.
But here's the kicker: gold isn't inherently money without us assigning it that role.
It's just element 79 on the periodic table.
Bitcoin? Same deal. It's a digital construct we engineered because we needed better properties for a global, hyperconnected world.
But in a human-less universe? Bitcoin's ledger halts. The network dies. The protocol becomes a fossil record of a species that once tried to escape monetary debasement.
This is the part most people miss:
The evolution of money doesn't happen because it's etched into the fabric of reality. It happens because we build it. We improve it. We upgrade the operating system.
Seashells → Gold → Paper → Digital.
Each iteration solves problems the previous one couldn't. Each step is a reflection of human ingenuity, not natural inevitability.
And right now, we're in the middle of the biggest monetary upgrade in human history.
Bitcoin isn't "real" in the sense that it exists independent of us. But neither is the dollar. Neither is gold as money.
The difference is Bitcoin was engineered—deliberately, mathematically, incorruptibly—to be the best form of money humans have ever created.
21 million hard cap. No central authority. No counterparty risk. No inflation. No debasement.
It's not real because it's natural. It's real because we made it that way.
And that's the point.
Bitcoin in Eigenverwahrung.
The Forgotten Bitcoin Mystery Isn’t Who Satoshi Was
It’s how many people knew about Bitcoin before Genesis Block.
The surviving record shows pre-release code reviews, private emails, trusted access to the project, and technical debates that began weeks before launch. Yet Bitcoin is still commonly described as the work of a lone inventor operating in isolation.
The documents tell a more complicated story.

On this day in history 15 years ago, cypherpunk Hal Finney argued Bitcoin can never be replaced because,
“Any successful replacement of the Bitcoin block chain will forever undermine the credibility of any successor. How is an investor to know that it won’t happen again?”
Bitcoin is the most honest macro asset -- in its design, it serves as a forward looking mirror -- I wonder all the time about what it's trying to tell us lays ahead.
