Pauls Vennells took close to £5 million in pay and bonuses over her seven years running the Post Office, including £2.93 million in performance related perks and pension in lieu payments.

During that same period, the Post Office prosecuted subpostmasters using data from a computer system it knew was flawed, and more than 900 were wrongly convicted of theft or false accounting between 1999 and 2015.

Some went to prison, others were made bankrupt or lost their livelihoods entirely. When Computer Weekly first exposed problems with the Horizon system, Vennells sent a company wide email rather than address the failures, according to a former executive.

She stepped down in 2019 just before a High Court judgment condemned the company's conduct, and some of the subpostmasters affected have since died without ever seeing compensation.

The formula is simple: zoom in on a tiny slice of geography, filter out the cool regions that ruin the story, and label a hot afternoon a global catastrophe.

The funniest part is the sheer hubris of the solution.

We are told the Earth's massive climate system operates like a living room thermostat, that if humans just stop CO2 emissions, we can magically freeze the weather at our preferred temperature.

Pretending we can micromanage global macro-cycles with carbon taxes.

But as long as panic funds the machine, and people don’t think by themselves, they’ll keep selling the front-row tickets.

Meet Dr Keith Wolverton, a genial British GP working in urgent care. During a consultation at a walk-in centre in Staffordshire, he asked a Muslim woman to remove her niqab because he had difficulty hearing her explain her young daughter’s symptoms. He cited issues with her English and the need to see her mouth movements for clear communication and proper diagnosis. She initially refused on religious grounds but eventually complied.

After her daughter received treatment and recovered, the thankless woman filed a complained that she felt “victimised and racially discriminated against.”

CONSEQUENCES: A Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service hearing found the doctor guilty of misconduct. He was initially suspended for 9 months. In 2026, Dr Wolverton was struck off the medical register (effectively sacked/banned from practising). All because he was concerned about the health of a child.

Forget the debate about whether that was a handball or not last night - the issue is the "clear and obvious" guidance.

IFAB guidance is:
"If an incident needs multiple replays, frame-by-frame analysis, or lengthy forensic examination, it may not meet the “clear and obvious” threshold.

The referee’s original call should generally stand unless the video evidence is compelling."

That's the charge Andrew Dallas needs to answer. Then he should be sacked.
