From Lagos to Nairobi: The Looming Crisis of Africa’s Skylines
The weekend collapse of two six-storey residential blocks in Tripoli, Lebanon, claimed 14 lives and exposed deep-seated infrastructure flaws. The scale of Lebanon’s crisis, however, only helps highlight the problem across Africa where it is far more staggering.
Across the continent’s rapidly expanding cities, structural failures have evolved from isolated incidents into a persistent humanitarian emergency.
Nigeria currently holds the grim distinction of the highest frequency of building collapses on the continent, with its sprawling commercial hub, Lagos, serving as the primary theatre of this crisis. Between 1978 and 2022, Lagos alone recorded approximately 300 collapses, resulting in over 400 fatalities and thousands of life-altering injuries.
The situation in East Africa, especially Kenya, is equally dire. Kenya's the rate of structural failure is nearing a breaking point, particularly within the urban corridors of Nairobi and Kiambu. Data from the National Construction Authority (NCA) reveals a terrifying trend: between 2009 and 2019, the country recorded 86 collapses, but that figure has been eclipsed in just the last five years.
Between 2020 and 2025, over 87 tragedies were reported, effectively doubling the rate of the previous decade and resulting in at least 200 deaths and 1,000 injuries.
The outlook for the capital is particularly bleak following an early 2026 survey of 15,000 structures, which led industry professionals to issue a chilling warning that over 85% of buildings in Nairobi are currently unfit for human occupation.
This systemic instability is echoed in North Africa, where Egypt remains a high-risk zone. Collapses are a frequent occurrence in the historic quarters of Alexandria and Cairo, where ageing infrastructure and unauthorised extensions create a volatile environment for residents, proving that from the Maghreb to the Gulf of Guinea, the dream of urban migration is increasingly being built on hollow foundations.
