Hi, I’m Adam from the UK 🇬🇧 and I’m building a 19ft wooden sailing boat (the #ClassGlobe580) to sail it solo 28,000 miles around the world in 2024. ⛵️ I’ve never built a boat before or sailed around the world. So why am I doing it?…
This was a major step to complete! 🙌⛵️ The build of the actual hull and deck is finished! You can see the 2 hatches and the observation pod on the top. Next is strengthening the joins then the deck gets covered in fibreglass and painted.

STAGE 6.4 OF BUILDING A BOAT 🛠️⛵️THE SKEG
It’s vital to have a strong skeg as the rudder fixes onto the boat at the top of the transom & the skeg at the bottom.
1. Cover the 3D printed template with fibreglass.
2. Remove & fill void with epoxy resin & chopped up fibreglass.
STAGE 6.2 OF BUILDING A BOAT ⚒️⛵️ The forepeak will be used mainly for storing the main batteries as well as tinned food & supplies. 🥫🗺️🧭The very front of the forepeak is the crash box which has been filled with polystyrene & sealed.

The new issue of Practical Boat Owner has hit the newsstand. Lots packed into this issue, including our thorough test of silicone antifouling and how keel design affects boat performance, plus an interview with Adam Waugh on building his 19ft boat for the 2025 Mini Globe Race
What to do next? I’m at the stage of the boat build now where there is LOTS to do: fit out the cabin with galley and nav table, finish fitting the cockpit or bunks or deck, to paint inside first or not…

I had some great help from Steve who provided me with step by step drawings. Hugo supplied me with some great knowhow and kit to prepare for the lift. Chris, Stephen & Christopher helped me turn her over. It went smoothly, as did our celebratory glass of Glenfiddich! 🥃
STAGE 5 OF BUILDING A BOAT 🛠️⛵️ ROLLING THE HULL
I had a few concerns…
1. Are the beams going to break when they took the full weight of the hull?
2. Are my winches up to the task?
3. Is there enough room to flip the boat over?

It was hard to stay positive when it was -3 degrees and I was in the fairing stage of the boat build. But you have good days and bad days. Please do share your inspiration and motivation - it helps!

Fairing is where you put on a thin layer of thickened epoxy, let it dry, then spend days & days sanding it all off again. It took a long time 😪 I put on 3 coats of Seajet 117 primer as the last step in this phase.

STAGE 4 OF BUILDING A BOAT 🛠️⛵️ GLASSING & FAIRING
I thought the process of putting on fibreglass would be a quick job…It wasn’t! In all honesty, I found this phase quite difficult & couldn’t wait for it to be over. The -3°C temps didn’t help🥶

Each layer was cut out and dry fitted in an operation which was more like a tailor’s shop than a boat builders shed. Each layer needs to be laid over an epoxy wetted hull then drenched in epoxy to bond it to the hull. I used West System for this & 407 fillers for the fairing.
STAGE 3 OF BUILDING A BOAT⛵🛠HULL BOARDING
After further tweaks and dry fits I screwed and glued the strings in place. I gave all the hull boards a coat of epoxy on their inner side before I started and all the stringers the same.

I started with the topsides, then the hull bottom and finally filled in the middle section. I decided to use slightly thickened epoxy to bond the bottom hull boards together. The middle chines are a not easy!
