We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Candice Hanson to the WAVE 2025 conference, "The Breathing Breakthrough: from ventilation to liberation."

Dr. Hanson is an emergency medicine consultant at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and co-director of emergency medicine training at Charlie’s. As a clinical toxicologist, she brings extensive expertise in managing patients through the Western Australian Toxicology Service (WATS) and the Western Australian Poisons Information Centre (WAPIC).

At WAVE 2025, Dr. Hanson will be presenting on toxicology and metabolic considerations during ventilation, offering invaluable insights into critical care management. With her background in emergency medicine, toxicology teaching, and sedation practices, this is a session you won’t want to miss!

Speaker announcement!

We are thrilled to welcome Dr Meg Harrold to the 2025 WAVE Conference. Dr Harrold is a dedicated and enthusiastic physiotherapist who has worked as a Senior Lecturer at Curtin University for the last 15 years. Her research interests are focused on intensive care rehabilitation and detecting deterioration in patients in acute settings.  Meg’s PhD looked at early mobilisation practices locally in Perth, around Australia and in Scotland. This work led to her becoming an integral part of the TEAM management committee that conducted an international randomised controlled trial investigating early mobilisation of patients in the intensive care unit.

Meg’s current role at Curtin University is the Director of Student Experience, where she is committed to enhancing the academic and personal growth of students. Alongside her academic responsibilities, Meg also holds a position at Royal Perth Hospital, where she enjoys bringing together her skills as an educator, researcher and clinician. She was recently recognised as the Royal Perth Hospital Research Foundation Mentor of the year for 2024.

A local graduate, Dr. Leong has dedicated her career to thoracic malignancy and ventilation, working across Royal Perth Hospital and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. She played a pivotal role in developing RPH’s Respiratory Lung Cancer Clinics and the Thoracic Oncology Multi-disciplinary Team. As the Medical Lead for ward-based ventilation, she was instrumental in creating the Respiratory Failure Unit at RPH.

Professor Berlowitz holds a joint appointment at The University of Melbourne and Austin Health as Chair of Physiotherapy (Clinical). His groundbreaking work focuses on the causes and treatments of sleep and breathing disorders in neuromuscular disease, particularly motor neurone disease and spinal cord injury.

With expertise spanning epidemiology, sleep and respiratory physiology, imaging, clinical trials, machine learning, and implementation science, David has led 26 investigator-initiated clinical trials, including multi-centre and multi-national studies, shaping the future of respiratory care.
