With everything happening in Europe right now, it's time to go back to @JDVance's speech in Munich. February 2025. Twenty months later, it reads with absolutely disconcerting clarity. Everything was already said.
A reminder. In front of Europe's entire elite, in icy silence, here's what he put on the table.
The biggest threat to Europe is not Russia. It's not China. It's the threat from within: a Europe retreating from its own fundamental values, the very values it once shared with America.
Romania annulled an entire presidential election based on flimsy suspicions from an intelligence agency and heavy pressure from its neighbors. A former EU commissioner went on TV sounding pleased about it, warning the same thing could happen in Germany. Vance's answer: if your democracy can be destroyed by a few hundred thousand dollars of online ads, it wasn't very strong to begin with.
During the Cold War, the side that censored dissidents, closed churches and canceled elections was the wrong side. It lost. So why is Europe borrowing its methods?
He laid out the facts. Brussels threatening to shut down social media during unrest the moment it spots what it deems "hateful." Germany, where police raid homes over online comments. The UK, where an army veteran was convicted for praying silently, alone, 50 meters from a clinic. Scotland, warning residents that even prayer inside their own homes could break the law.
He called out those Soviet-era words, "misinformation" and "disinformation," wielded by entrenched interests who can't stand the idea that someone might think differently, vote differently, or worse, win.
And he asked THE question nobody in Brussels dares to ask. You know what you want to defend yourselves against. But what are you defending yourselves for? What is the positive vision?
Immigration: no voter in Europe went to the ballot box to open the floodgates to millions of unvetted migrants. Those were political decisions, made consciously, over a decade. The day before his speech, in Munich itself, a car plowed into a crowd.
Economy: competitive industries, affordable energy, secure supply chains all require hard choices, which means strong democratic mandates. And you don't win a mandate by censoring your opponents or throwing them in jail.
Then the line that sums it all up: if you're running in fear of your own voters, there is nothing America can do for you.
No firewalls. Democracy rests on one sacred principle: the voice of the people matters. You either uphold it or you don't.
He closed with John Paul II: "Do not be afraid."
Twenty months later, look at Warsaw.
Yesterday, the head of Poland's Constitutional Tribunal was pushed out of his own court for a month. Riot police sealed off the building. He was left standing outside the gates. Protesters cut the chain with a saw to let him back in. Poland's President turned his plane around mid-flight and flew home in the middle of the night.
And Donald Tusk, Brussels' favorite son, calmly tweeted: "Restoring the rule of law is our duty. There is no other way."
Let's call it what it is: a globalist coup attempt. Riot police around a constitutional court, in the name of the "rule of law." Exactly what Vance warned about: an elite so afraid of its own voters that it shuts down every institution that won't obey. And Brussels, the same Brussels that froze billions for Poland for years over judicial independence, looking the other way.
But Poland will resist. This is a nation that survived partitions, Nazism and communism. It knows exactly what it looks like when a regime decides it stands above the people. Its president flew home overnight. Its people were at the gates by nightfall. Poland will not bend.
And that's the whole lesson. The future of Europe is more Poland, not more France.
Because France is burning. Two weeks ago, a national protest against the cost of living turned into the worst riots in years. Burned cars, looted stores, fires on the boulevards of Paris, high schools set ablaze across the country. Six months before a presidential election, the country is running on fumes, governed by exactly the technocratic model Vance described: deaf to its people, drowning in rules, unable to deliver anything.
Poland builds an army, guards its borders, holds on to its faith and its identity. France regulates, borrows, and burns.
It's time for Europe's technocratic leaders to step aside for sovereign leaders. Yes, that will likely mean the breakup of the European Union as we know it, and a return to a Europe of nations. And that will be good news.
Because these people are now responsible for chaos that spills far beyond Europe. For one simple reason: their central-planning vision of the economy. Rules, quotas, targets set from above, subsidies steered by committees, entire industries decided in Brussels. Like every collectivist, central-planning vision, it produces nothing but garbage results. Every time. No exceptions. History has proven it a hundred times, and they keep trying again, convinced that this time, with the right people in charge, it will work.
It won't. It already isn't. They need to leave power, and fast.
And if these people refuse to understand, then the United States must use every lever at its disposal, trade, diplomatic, political, to put an end to this diabolical project that is driving Western civilization straight into a wall.
I simply can't fucking believe this is happening.
How the hell is the Islamisation of the world allowed to happen everywhere?
In Israel, of all places, a party whose Muslim leader refuses to recognise Hamas as a terrorist group has more seats in parliament than Jewish Israeli nationalists, after Hamas's massacre!!!!
In the US, Muslim Brotherhood candidates are running for the senate, with the full backing of the Democrats.
And, Western Europe is entirely captured by the Muslim Brother and Jihadists!
What the fucking hell is wrong with you all?
Are you so despicable and cowardly that you're literally allowing the scum of the earth yo take over your countries?
What the fuck is happening? Did you look at places like Iraq and Lebanon and decided "ah, we'd love to be like these countries"?
This is sickening!
Be serious about what you do. But never take yourself seriously.
In mid-May, I posted about wokeism. Over 100 million views. Picked up by a ton of media outlets. And right after, Elon Musk and Javier Milei followed me.
I'm not telling you this to flex. I'm telling you because it made me look at these two much more closely. And the more I watch them, the more convinced I am that they embody exactly what entrepreneurs will have to become.
First, they don't take status seriously.
Elon posts memes at 2am between rocket launches. Milei campaigned with a chainsaw. You can find that ridiculous. I find it deeply healthy.
Because I'm so done with guys who, after a bit of business success, give themselves an air of importance that Elon doesn't have 1% of. The grave tone. The persona. The distance. As if a fundraise or an exit turned them into sages.
Second, they're driven purely by infinite-sum games.
A finite-sum game is a fixed-size pie: whatever you win, someone else loses. An infinite-sum game is one where the goal is to grow the pie and keep playing.
And here's what I've come to understand: in finite-sum ecosystems, people almost always end up behaving badly. Not because they're bad people. Because the structure of the game pushes them there. When the pie doesn't grow, the only way to move forward is to take someone else's slice. Office politics, rent-seeking, backstabbing, envy.
This is exactly what Peter Thiel understood when he wrote "Competition is for losers."
It's not a VC punchline. It's a thesis about human nature. Thiel had René Girard as a mentor at Stanford, and Girard spent his life showing one thing: we desire what others desire. Mimetic desire. And when everyone wants the same thing in a limited space, rivalry turns destructive. Competitors become so obsessed with each other that they forget what they were supposed to build.
Thiel's lesson: don't fight over the same pie as everyone else. Create a pie that didn't exist.
And I believe that in the age of abundance that's coming, with AI, energy, robotics, this is precisely what will redefine capitalism. We're moving from a capitalism of capture to a capitalism of creation. Those who play finite games will tear each other apart over crumbs. Those who play infinite games will build what comes next.
Elon doesn't take market share, he creates markets. Milei is trying to do the same thing at the scale of a country: pull Argentina out of a logic where people fight to divide up scarcity, and put it back into a game where wealth gets created.
I deeply admire them both.
And I think these two qualities are connected.
Not taking yourself seriously isn't just a nice personality trait. It's a competitive advantage. It's what lets you keep learning.
Because the day you start taking yourself seriously, you have a persona to protect. And when you have a persona to protect, you're afraid of being wrong, afraid of looking stupid, afraid of asking the naive question. You stop listening. And you stop learning.
Status is a finite game: there's only one spot at the top, and everyone's fighting for it.
Learning is an infinite game.
Be serious about what you do. Never take yourself seriously.

Bernie Sanders says the top 1% owns more than the bottom 93%, that fewer than a thousand billionaires got $2.2 trillion richer last year, and that it's "obscene."
It's the most seductive and most wrong economic argument of our time. Let me explain why.
First, wealth distribution follows a power law. Always. Everywhere. Books, music, startups, followers on X, goals in soccer. A small minority captures most of the value. That's not a bug of capitalism. It's the mathematical signature of every system where value gets created.
So the only question that matters isn't "how big is the rich's slice?" It's "is the cake growing, and is the slice of the poorest growing with it?"
And the answer is yes. In 1990, more than one human in three lived in extreme poverty. Today it's about one in ten. During exactly the period when billionaires multiplied.
Bernie shows you the slice. He never shows you the cake.
Second thing he won't tell you: past a certain level, wealth stops being consumption. It becomes capital allocation.
Elon Musk isn't sleeping on a pile of cash. He owns stakes in Tesla, SpaceX, xAI. Jeff Bezos owns Amazon stock. That "$2.2 trillion" isn't sitting in a checking account. It's factories, rockets, data centers, millions of jobs. Nobody can eat $100 billion. You can only decide where to invest it.
Once you understand that, the whole debate changes. The real question becomes: who allocates capital better?
The people who built Amazon, SpaceX and Nvidia? Or politicians?
A 5% wealth tax isn't "taking money from the rich." It's taking investment decisions away from people who proved they can create value and handing them to people who proved the opposite.
Because the fundamental difference between an entrepreneur and a politician is consequences.
The entrepreneur invests his own money. If he allocates badly, he loses everything. The market corrects him brutally, no appeal. That's why most startups die: the system kills bad decisions.
The politician invests other people's money. If he allocates badly, nothing happens. Worse, he gets a bigger budget to "fix the problem."
Milton Friedman put it better than anyone. There are four ways to spend money. Your money on yourself: you care about price and quality. Your money on others: you care about price. Others' money on yourself: you care about quality. Others' money on others: you care about nothing.
Government is the fourth box. By design.
Perfect example: California high-speed rail. Approved in 2008 for about $33 billion. Current estimated cost: over $100 billion. Passengers carried: zero. No entrepreneur would have survived that. The politicians who pushed it built careers on it.
And when allocation has no consequences, it eventually finds a buyer. A politician who controls billions without accountability becomes the most profitable target in the world for anyone who wants to steer that money.
The irony is that the left that rails against billionaires is itself funded by billionaires. George Soros is one of the biggest Democratic donors in history. The Gates Foundation shapes public health policy across the planet.
Politicians don't fight billionaires. They pick their own. The ones who fund the state over the ones who compete with it.
So if we actually want fewer poor people, we have to stop judging ideas by their intentions and start judging them by their results. And the results are brutally clear.
China, 1978: Deng Xiaoping opens the economy to markets. More than 800 million people escape extreme poverty. The largest retreat of misery in human history. Not through redistribution. Through the freedom to build.
India, 1991: liberalization. Same movie.
South Korea and North Korea: same people, same language, same starting point in 1953. One became one of the most advanced economies on earth. The other has famines.
Poland and Ukraine: comparable living standards in 1990. Today the average Pole is more than three times richer than the average Ukrainian.
Argentina: a year and a half of liberalization, and the poverty rate falls from over 50% to around 30%.
No country in history escaped poverty by punishing the people who build. Every single one did it by letting them build.
And if you want to see what Bernie's program looks like in real life, you don't have to imagine it. It exists. It's called France. We've been running it for 45 years.
Mass nationalizations in 1981. Two years later, Socialist president Mitterrand has to reverse course into austerity.
Retirement at 60. The 35-hour workweek.
A wealth tax for 35 years. Hundreds of wealthy households left every year for Belgium, Switzerland, London, taking their capital, their companies and their future taxes with them. Macron finally scrapped it in 2018.
Hollande's 75% tax: raised a few hundred million, drove talent out, abandoned after two years.
One of the highest tax burdens in the OECD. Public spending around 57% of GDP, a record in the developed world.
Last balanced budget: 1974. Public debt: over €3.4 trillion. Mass unemployment for four decades.
If taxing the rich and growing the state made people prosperous, France would be the richest country on the planet.
It isn't. GDP per capita in France is barely more than half of America's. It's lower than Mississippi, the poorest state in the US. Not a single global tech giant. Our best engineers build Silicon Valley instead. I've been going back and forth between Paris and San Francisco for years. I see it every week.
And California is about to replay the movie. Prop 40, on the ballot November 3rd, would take 5% of billionaires' net worth. Even Gavin Newsom, a Democratic governor, opposes it. The state's own nonpartisan budget analyst warns that income tax revenue could drop every year if the wealthy leave. Larry Page, Sergey Brin and Peter Thiel have reportedly already started moving their assets out.
You don't fight poverty by shrinking the top. You fight it by growing the cake.
Bernie wants a society where nobody has too much. I want a society where nobody has too little.
The first has been tried everywhere and produces equality in stagnation. The second lifted a billion people out of misery.
Choose.
Why the Virtuous Majority Keeps Losing.
Most people are decent. They work, raise their children, pay their taxes, and don’t lie more than they have to. And yet, again and again, the country is run against them.
How?
Turns out the mechanism has a name: Olson’s logic of collective action. An economist named Mancur Olson worked it out in 1965.
The idea is simple. Imagine a subsidy worth millions to a small group of companies. It costs every taxpayer the price of a coffee. Who will organize? The few, for whom it is worth millions – they will hire lobbyists, fund campaigns, show up at every meeting. The many, each losing the price of a coffee, will do nothing. Nobody marches for the price of a coffee.
Concentrated gains organize. Dispersed losses sleep.
Add the free rider: in a large group, everyone hopes someone else will do the work. So nobody does.
That is why the small organized minority beats the large disorganized majority, almost every time. Not because it is right. Because it shows up.
Now look around. The grant-funded NGO, the bureaucracy defending its budget, the activist network with full-time staff, the lobby with an office next to the ministry. Each has a lot to gain from one more rule, one more program, one more subsidy. The families paying for it each lose a little – and they are busy raising children.
Vice organizes itself, because vice pays its organizers. Virtue has to be organized, because its rewards are spread across everyone.
Olson saw the long-run consequence too. In a second book he argued that stable nations slowly fill up with these organized interests, each defending its slice – until the whole country stiffens and growth stalls. Germany and Japan boomed after the war partly because defeat had swept the old coalitions away.
So what do we do? Olson’s own logic gives the answer.
Make the dispersed costs visible. The coffee nobody notices becomes a bill everyone can read. That is what telling the truth does.
Give the virtuous a reason to show up beyond duty: friendship, community, careers, joy. Movements that last give their members something to belong to.
And remember that the majority never needs to organize all at once. A committed minority is enough to start – the long march proved it. The rest follow once they see they are not alone.
And it needs structure. That is what the network of patriots across Western Civilization – and the Council of Western Civilization at its center – are for. Not to give orders. To show the direction, so the energy is not scattered. To give the vocabulary, so people can name what is being done to them. And to coordinate, so no one fights alone. Olson’s lesson in one line: the organized few beat the disorganized many. So become the organized many.
And here is the good news. Olson wrote in 1965, when organizing cost meetings, letters, money and years. Today it costs a post. The math that kept the decent majority asleep is changing.
The majority does not win by being right. It wins by showing up – together.

You know what people weren't ready for? Fucking mammoths. Tigers eating them. Monkeys ripping their arms off. The black plague. The ice age. Smallpox. Vikings pulling up on the beach. Drinking water that gives you diarrhea until you die. Getting a scratch and losing your whole leg. The Mongols. The Spanish Inquisition.
