One of the easiest ways to expose stride control problems is to remove your cleats during portions of your workouts.
A long stride is not automatically poor mechanics. In a clean pocket, with a clear read and a straightforward decision, striding into the throw can help generate force and produce an excellent ball. There are plenty of examples of elite quarterbacks delivering high-level throws with a long stride when the timing, space, and progression are already settled.
The issue is functionality. Quarterbacks do not always get a clean picture or an immediate answer. Progression discipline requires the ability to eliminate a throw, reset the base, and move to the next decision without unnecessary recovery. When the stride becomes overextended, the quarterback has to unwind his lower half before he can redirect, which slows processing and limits his ability to operate inside a condensed pocket.
Try throwing on turf in socks. If the stride gets too long, the lead foot will slide and provide immediate feedback. It is a simple constraint that teaches the quarterback to keep his feet underneath his body and maintain stride control.
The goal is not to eliminate long strides. The goal is to develop enough control to use them when the structure allows, while still preserving pocket integrity, progression discipline, and access to the next throw.
