Lionel Messi retired from Argentina this week.

I've been sitting with it for a couple of days and I still don't really have the words.

I grew up in Buenos Aires. Football there isn't something you watch. It's the thing that holds a whole country together on a Sunday, and Messi carried that for us for twenty years.

People forget how hard his own country was on him for a long time.

He left for Spain at 13, so some never fully claimed him. He kept reaching finals and losing them. And every day he had to live under the same sentence. He's not Maradona.

Four finals lost. One World Cup, three Copas. After the last one, at 29, he stood in front of the cameras with red eyes and said he was done with the national team.

I remember that night. Half of Argentina was furious with him and the other half just wanted to protect him.

And then he came back. Because of course he did.

Then in 2022, he did it. He won the World Cup and gave an entire country the one thing it had waited 36 years for.

I was thousands of miles from home when it happened, the way I have been for most of my life now. It still felt like the whole country was standing in one room.

But here's what I'll remember him for, and it was never really the goals, even though he scored more for Argentina than anyone ever has.

It was the way he carried himself.

He was the best player on the planet and he never once acted like it. Quiet. Humble. He let his feet do the talking and never needed to tell you how great he was.

He got knocked down more publicly than almost anyone I can think of, and he kept showing up. He didn't get bitter and he didn't disappear. He just kept going until the whole world saw him the way he deserved.

Gracias, Leo.

You made a whole country proud. And you made a kid from Buenos Aires, watching from the other side of the world, proud to be Argentine.

We'll be telling our kids about you for the rest of our lives.
