Besides films and series, I also watch variety shows to unwind. From my own experience appearing on variety shows, I feel pretty relaxed when filming. I just need to be myself on screen — that's enough.
There are so many types of variety shows now — for example, 'Natural High' is a travel and healing show, while 'Crazy Treasure Hunt' and 'Great Detective' are more brain-teaser shows. Presenting my understanding of different things across various types of shows, and showing different sides of myself — I think all of that requires genuine expression.
Singing is also a hobby I've had since I was a kid. I used to love singing songs by Hong Kong and Taiwanese artists, and I'd even record myself singing in the bathroom with a microphone. Those moments were so carefree and happy. I started performing on stage back in school, but those stages were nothing like what I face now. Standing in front of tens of thousands of people still makes me nervous, even after rehearsing and mentally preparing for a long time.
Looking back on those experiences now, I still find them really interesting. After performing in front of audiences a few times, I've gotten more comfortable with it. I feel like I'm slowly rediscovering the pure joy and love for singing that I had as a child.
Last year, I also tried writing my own lyrics for the first time. But that first attempt was still a bit forced — I was rhyming just for the sake of rhyming, and it felt a little vague without a concrete anchor. If I get another chance to write lyrics, I'd like to tell stories with real emotions. I think that would be better.
No matter what form of creation it is, you need to accumulate real feelings and emotions. To observe and gather more material, I set a goal for myself: to find one thing worth remembering every day. Though I haven't stuck to it strictly.
One recent happy moment that really stuck with me was when I was driving one day, and halfway through, the alarm on my phone went off. The rhythm, the drums, and the BPM of that alarm tone matched perfectly with the song that was playing in the car at that exact moment.
At first, when the alarm went off, I found it annoying and wanted to turn it off right away. But then I heard it layering with the background music — that moment was so beautiful. I just can't remember which song it was.
Since work has been so busy lately, I've put both writing and casual photography on hold. Only on my days off do I actively go out to make new memories and take photos to capture them.
After this busy stretch is over, I'll have some time off for myself. My ideal way to unwind is to just stay in bed for three or four days and rest completely, then find a place where no one knows me and relax for a few more days. After that, I'd like to settle into a more structured routine — eating, sleeping, and working out at regular, healthy times. After about half a month of that, I'll probably be heading back to set to start a new character's life.

Interview #Wanganyu in #TMagazineChina
I put my own understanding out there, and in return, I gain new experiences from both the characters and the audience. This is a two-way path written by Wang Anyu himself.
I often write a letter to the characters I've played, after I've said goodbye to them. But lately I haven't been handwriting as much. Back in primary and middle school, I had to keep a diary, so I got used to writing things down frequently. Now if I want to jot something down, I mostly do it in my notes app. I write when I'm feeling emotional or when I want to be a little sentimental.
Let me open my notes app and see — the last thing I wrote was about my new film 'Love Is Anger'. Since I needed to chat with the audience during the roadshow, I wanted to write down my own thoughts about the film first, so it'd be easier to share and exchange ideas with everyone at the event.
I wrote about my understanding of the word 'anger' in the title: to me, anger here is actually about persistence. Anger makes the unheard heard, and the unseen seen. It makes the overlooked noticed and the forgotten remembered. Something along those lines.
Yesterday (the day before the interview), during the later roadshow sessions, the audience was really enthusiastic during the post-screening Q&A. They talked with us about the details and metaphors in the film, and how they felt about the story. We had a great time chatting. I think exchanges like that are really meaningful to me.
Writing down my thoughts isn't limited by time or place. As long as I have a flat table and a pen that works, I can write. I once took a photo of a pen I'd used — it wasn't anything special, just a regular ballpoint pen. Whenever I feel like writing, I just grab whatever's nearby and start recording.
Even though I haven't been actively reflecting on myself lately, I still think a lot about acting. For example, I really enjoy trying out roles I've never played before. I'm drawn to challenging characters and hope to portray emotions and states I've never experienced before.
I think playing a character who's completely different from myself is the most interesting part. For me, it feels like breaking free from chains.
After the styling and makeup for a character are done, I slowly ease into the character's mindset. Once I put myself into the role, the only thing on my mind is whether I can convey the character's emotions well and present them fully to the audience in that scene. In my view, shaping a character's appearance actually becomes a driving force that helps me open up and throw myself into the performance.
Many characters also leave their mark on me. For instance, in 'Love Is Anger', I played Liu Hao — he's a rather serious person who dares to express his emotions, even his 'anger'. He takes the initiative, doesn't overthink or waste energy on internal conflict, stands firm in what he believes in, and fights for the justice he sees.
These traits are very different from who I really am, because I'm someone who's easily influenced by the outside world. When problems arise, I tend to blame myself first. After playing this role, I feel like I've subtly 'absorbed' some of his essence. In certain situations, I find myself having more of an edge and a clearer stance. When it comes to standing up for what matters, I've become tougher than before.
I'm still figuring out the best way to get into character. For me, the hardest part is empathy. An actor needs to resonate with the character internally, while also making sure the audience can read the character's emotions and circumstances. In my opinion, there should be a kind of tension that connects the actor, the character, and the audience — each reaching toward the others.
From understanding a character, to performing them, to finally having the work seen by the audience — the ideal state I hope for is that all three parties can reach a shared empathy.
