Despite Nidhi’s efforts with Sushil & the mechanics at Sam Motors, @uberdutt’s W1 was kaput and was left behind at Yakutsk. Repacking into 4 vehicles, we left for Magadan. The road was built by Gulag prisoners in extreme conditions and many died, hence the name Road of Bones!

All vehicles were lined up in order - a dozen small cars first, then long trailers, what a treat to watch. We enjoyed the sunset while the ferry loaded. The ramp was pulled, signalled ok to the master on the wheel, ropes hoisted and the ferry moved north on the Lena for 10 km.

Our guide Dima booked us an amazing place in Yakutsk, a wooden 3 storey restaurant full of antiques - old cameras, typewriters, vessels, antlers, tepees & hunting trophies. We had fried fish, snow sheep meat, reindeer meat, rice, salad & vodka before heading back to Hotel Lena.

After exploring the dacha, we had lunch - snow sheep meat, meat rice, salad, steamed potatoes, homemade bread, cheesy butter, frozen raw fish, mashed wild berries & lassi like liquor. The warmth of our hosts added to the cosy comfort of the dining cum kitchen. This is life!

We reached a clear patch with cosy logwood structures - small units, main living area and kitchen with glass panels to enjoy the beauty of the woods. The living room was a double storey with toilet at the back, a garage for the safari vehicle and 4 wheel snow bike that we rode!

It was time to visit a dacha. Dachas are small country estates with an orchard gifted by the tsar for use as a second home that became popular among the Russian upper & middle classes. Marina had invited us for lunch at her dacha, 40 km from Yakutsk, near a jungle! #RoadtoSiberia

At the subterranean Kingdom of Permafrost we hired hooded overcoats and footwear to enter through its triple doors. Amazing concept with soft music, beautiful carvings, sculptures and ice statues lit up in different colours as we walked along a U-shaped path. It's -20 inside!

We explored Yakutsk’s stunning churches and monuments like the Victory Stele, a war memorial from WWII at Victory Park. We walked to the riverfront and visited Yakutsk Regional History Museum, Permafrost Institute and Mammoth Museum with exhibits from the Ice Age. #RoadtoSiberia

Equally efficiently, the ferry docked on the other bank up the river. It was a treat and pleasure to watch. And after a thrilling drive, we finally reached Yakutsk, the coldest city in the world to the warmest welcome ever. #RoadtoSiberia

Team WBB reached the jetty for the Lena ferry crossing, a well managed operation with four loading points manned by two people. All exhibited extreme patience n we felt it would take hours but in 30 min we were directed to jetty 4, a ferry arrived and loading started.

Lunch was at a small cafe. The hot Borscht with veggies & meat was comforting. Vegetarians had minimal choice. It was cold and windy outside though the cosy interiors and warmth of our hostess was most comforting. Despite language barriers Google translator helped! #RoadtoSiberia

No cafes or vehicles for long stretches to Yakutsk. The monotony of the drive was broken by a few bends and the odd deviation for some road work. Patches of gravel and uneven roads with potholes made the drive interesting, especially for manual drive vehicles! #RoadtoSiberia

The ice on the road was melting. Not much traffic. We refuelled and after a while the ice gave way to yellows, greens and reds of the foliage. The terrain was flat, the road was ramrod straight but the slight undulation made it rise up and down over the distance. #RoadtoSiberia

The hotel in Aldan was lovely with large, warm cosy rooms and a well equipped kitchen. The next morning we were greeted by a refreshing sight - a clean blanket of white uniformly spread outside. It was -3 degrees! #RoadtoSiberia

Soon it started raining, followed by snowfall. The convoy cut down speed. There was sudden change in landscape with snowflakes on the trees. It was overcast with reduced visibility. This was an unexpected change of weather and it was forecasted to snow near Aldan. #RoadtoSiberia

We stopped at a parking spot with abandoned goods train wagons covered in graffiti and vibrant wall art. The leaves had begun to fall. In the distance, we saw snow covered peaks. Locals said it was going to be an early winter! #RoadtoSiberia
