In 2017, I took a chance on a fifth-round draft pick out of the University of South Carolina — RHP Tyler Johnson. Unfortunately an arm injury ended his Chicago White Sox career after five seasons. However, that setback didn’t stop him — it prepared him.

Now he’s channeling that same discipline, focus, and competitive fire into something even bigger. Tyler is training to become a flight aviator with the United States Navy.

From the mound to the cockpit.

The uniform may have changed, but the mission-driven mindset hasn’t. The same toughness that carried him through five pro seasons is now carrying him toward serving something greater than himself.

Proud doesn’t even begin to cover it. Once a competitor on the field — now a future leader in the skies. #USNAVY 🇺🇸 ✈️

An update: Shortly after retiring from baseball, I began the process to become selected to the Naval Aviation Pilot Program as an Aviation Officer Candidate. Today it has come to fruition! I was selected, sworn in by oath and now will begin my journey to become a Navy pilot!
