Nothing satisfies me more than carrying the message down in the trenches of communities large and small, and nothing has more impact than doing so with colleagues at HBF. Recently in Hudson, Wisconsin we celebrated our soon-to-open outpatient site
All things must pass and so do I.
Here is a message this week to my colleagues that I also share with my friends, fellow travelers and advocates in the field that has meant so much to me.
Since the 2024 Broken Open book tour has come to an end, I’ve turned back to sharing my thoughts on Substack. My most recent article, “Truth Tempers,” is a look back on two book tours, two decades, and how times have changed. Click below to read.

Some recent stops on the Broken Open book tour: Atlanta, Denver, Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Kenosha. At every stop I am reminded that the greatest gift of my long, imperfect journey is the friends and fellow travelers I meet along the way. Read more about it on Instagram…
This week was the eighth annual Recovery Reinvented conference in Bismarck, North Dakota hosted by Gov. Doug Burgum and First Lady Kathryn Burgum. Around 1,200 people packed the civic center to relish in recovery, advocacy, collaboration, and education.
On the way to Bismarck to plug into an opportunity that is bigger than me: Recovery Reinvented. This morning, I talked with Jonathan Holth and Studio 701 about the event. Click the link to hear our discussion... https://t.co/cRXPTq6snf
Thursday I will be in Kenosha, Wisconsin at the famed Blue House Books. We will be signing books, reading, and discussing. The event is free, but registration is required—you can find the link below. I hope to see you there!

And here it is… Broken Open release day. It’s hard to summarize everything that has gone into this book. It has been a joyous, rewarding, difficult, exciting, and fulfilling process. I couldn’t be more grateful. Thank you to the countless people who have supported this project.
I recently had the honor of speaking with NPR’s Scott Simon. We discussed recovery, Broken Open, and my journey. Tune in tomorrow, Saturday, August 31st, to hear our conversation. Thank you, Scott, for taking the time to talk with me and highlight the importance of recovery
Just one more week until the release of Broken Open on September 3rd! I am excited, honored, anxious, grateful, and proud to launch this book into the world. I appreciate each and every chance to share my story, and the release of Broken Open is no different.
The Broken Open book tour begins in two weeks! Join me for my first event at Next Chapter Booksellers in St. Paul, MN. Next Chapter is in the heart of the St. Paul recovery community and an important fixture of the neighborhood. I can’t think of a better place to begin this tour
