the reason why soccer’s not a thing in america is because its entertainment payoff distribution has a mode near zero.
you can sit through 90 min & the modal outcome is nothing fucking happens. american sports solved this with guaranteed event frequency… e.g. baseball gives you a discrete resolution every ~30 sec, & american football every play. the floor is high even when the ceiling is low.
while soccer is a lottery ticket.. you occasionally get mexico/england, otherwise you get the snoozefest that was portugal vs spain.
@reed@TheRideshareGuy Seems improbable, frankly. Number of people extending a trip has to be small. More likely two bookings coming in at the same / similar time were given the same pre-booking estimate and one person beat the other to it.
Instantaneous demand inputs make this super hard, even for Waymo. Two people see 13 mins and it’s a race condition to see who gets that car.
It’s also very expensive compute wise (mostly for Google API calls so maybe Waymo should be best!) to constantly run the full optimizer which gives most accurate ETAs just for everyone looking at their app Home Screen. So probably they are running a lighter weight heuristic to provide a pre-booking estimate, then actually optimize after booking.
Honored to be selected as a Southwest Regional Winner in the @EYnews Entrepreneur of the Year program. This is really a team award for the entire @RideAlto team! Of all we’ve done over 8 years, I’m most proud of the team we’ve built. To the engineers, marketers, operators, and most importantly the drivers — this is for you!
@gbrulte@Waymo@AmericanExpress@Uber Strange to select between two vehicles with the same max capacity. This (heavily) sub-optimizes the fleet density problem without material value creation.
