This Zimbabwean Woman sold a South African man a plate of beef stew and Sadza( Pap) at her roadside stall in Johannesburg.

After eating her food, the man refused to pay her R35. A small arguement ensued over non payment. The South African man got upset that an African foreigner is talking to him like that. On the night of April 11, 1944, pilot Alexander Mamkin landed a burning R-5 biplane, fully loaded with small orphans, on the ice of the Belarusian lake Bolnyrya. It was his 75th return from the German rear. And the last one...

A few years ago, the magazine "Rodina" tracked down one of the passengers saved that day - 10-year-old Galya Forenko:

- So many years have passed, but even now I can hear the bullets hitting the plane's fuselage, - said Galina Petrovna (in the photo). - I thought someone had thrown a handful of pebbles at us. But the "pebbles" pierced the fuel tank - and our children's flight burst into flames.

Almost 200 children from orphanages aged 3 to 15 were to be evacuated to the mainland from a partisan airfield near the village of Usachi. From the end of March, Lieutenant Alexander Mamkin's R-5 began to transport the children. He even made it into the newsreels...

- We were loaded like this: seven in the unglazed navigator's cabin behind the pilot's compartment, - recalled the interviewee of "Rodina". - The pilot arrived without a navigator to take more cargo. In the cramped compartment between the skis, we placed educator Valentina Stepanovna Lotko with her 4-year-old son Tolik and two other children, and somewhere at the end in the fuselage - two stretchers with wounded partisans. There were 13 of us in total.

Already on the approach, we heard the clatter of "pebbles"...

- I didn't see the German plane, but the nose of ours suddenly burst into blue flames, just like from a soldering lamp. And the fire whistlingly spread to Mamkin's cabin. I could only clearly see his back and his hands, which didn't let go of the steering wheel. I remember that the overalls on his back suddenly started to burst and the fur turned inside out. Then - a crash to the ground, a flash of the pilot's body.

Six days later, Mamkin, who had 90 percent of his body burned and his legs charred to the bone, died in the hospital without regaining consciousness...

Galia Petrovna managed to trace the fate of six of the 13 passengers of the fiery flight. They had 9 children, and those gave birth to 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

They still live among us today - Mamkin's fiery godchildren.
