Weaver’s role as Ellen Ripley marked her first major film appearance, and the film went on to gross over $100 million worldwide, becoming one of the most influential science fiction films of its era.

Betty White’s World War II uniform stands as far more than simple documentation of her military contributions. It functions as a tangible archive of her personal experiences.

Years before she rose to become one of television’s most cherished figures, Betty White set aside her aspirations in Hollywood so she could contribute to the national effort. In 1941, when she was only 19, she enlisted in the American Women’s Voluntary Services after the United States entered World War II.

Her assignment involved motor transport. Day after day she operated a sturdy PX truck, carrying essential goods such as soap, toothpaste, and candy to artillery positions scattered across the California hills.

Once evening arrived, she exchanged her work clothes for evening wear and joined dances intended to lift the spirits of young troops about to leave for overseas duty.

After her death in December 2021, her estate presented the carefully maintained olive-drab AWVS uniform and its accompanying shoulder bag to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. The gift disclosed an extraordinary collection of everyday home-front objects.

Within the bag, museum staff uncovered everyday wartime items that included blank V-mail stationery, gasoline ration coupons, red food tokens, and a makeup compact stamped with the AWVS emblem.

Most moving of all were 29 distinct military insignia pins given to her by individual service members, together with a meticulously kept handwritten roster of their names. These objects preserve a deeply intimate and lasting record of human connection and patriotic feeling during the war.

By 1988, Katharine Hepburn had already spent more than half a century defying expectations, both on screen and off.

She purchased her Manhattan townhouse in the Turtle Bay neighborhood in 1931 and made it her New York home for decades. Hepburn was famously independent and intensely private, preferring a relatively ordinary neighborhood life despite being one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

Her career was anything but ordinary. Hepburn won four Academy Awards for Best Actress, a record that still stands, for Morning Glory, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, The Lion in Winter and On Golden Pond. She received 12 acting nominations over a career spanning more than 60 years.

She also rejected many of Hollywood’s expectations for women, wearing trousers when they were still considered unconventional and cultivating an image based more on intelligence and independence than glamour.

Hepburn remained in her Turtle Bay townhouse until the final years of her life. After her death in 2003 at age 96, the intersection of East 49th Street and Second Avenue was named Katharine Hepburn Place in her honor.
