Together w/ @TooheyL presented research from our @weaponisedtrade project at the @asilorg@ILA_official Asia Pacific Research Forum in Taipei. What is Weaponized Trade, how to legally treat WT measures, do we need new doctrine?
Thanks to @AsafLubin & @PashaHsieh for invite.
Seems a bit rich. When Beijing hit Australian exports, Washington didn’t request, let alone prevent, US firms from snapping up Australia’s lost market share in China. In fact, US companies picked up more $$$ than those from any other country. https://t.co/xIMYuJFY68
The Albanese government is bending over over backwards to provide Beijing with a face-saving off-ramp in the barley dispute case at the WTO. Whether Beijing comes to the party is up to it. But there can be no suggestion of anything other than Canberra being driven by diplomacy.
Anti-coercion instrument is latest unilateral measure Brussels adopted after declaring China a "systemic rival." Could be used to retaliate against things like China’s block on imports from Lithuania over its relationship with Taiwan.

These findings are important, but the main purpose of China's ec coercion measures is to "kill the chicken to scare the monkey." In that regard, it may have achieved some success that isn't addressed in this study. https://t.co/S7ipLgfYbK
Finally, some media accountability for past assessments & predictions made around China by the likes of @ASPI_org Peter Jennings. Its been a major shortcoming of Australia's China debate. Allegations are made, get debunked, but the narrative just rolls on. https://t.co/zn74nbixMs
NEW. “Australia’s Narrative on Beijing’s Economic Coercion: Context and Critique”. Pleased to contribute a chapter to a just-published book, Different Histories, Shared Futures: Dialogues on Australia-China, edited by colleagues at @UniofAdelaide. Abstract 👇 /1 @UTSEngage
The latest Australia-China update from @KandyWong_SCMP. If Beijing imagines that going slow on removing trade restrictions will earn leverage on foreign investment decisions by Canberra, then nothing has been learnt. Entirely counterproductive. https://t.co/2XK7f3cKWc
Context: As 🇺🇸 politicians, unions & pundits lament 🇪🇺 "trade threats" against IRA's local content requirements, it's worth recalling that the 🇺🇸 recently applied countervailing duties against 🇩🇪 and🇰🇷 steel exports allegedly 'benefiting' from 🇪🇺 🇩🇪 & 🇰🇷 climate laws. Short 🧵
Our next publication, w/ @KASonline (Australia and Pacific): "Weaponised Trade: A New Concept for an Increasingly Complex World", by @MarkusAWagner. We continue to explore today's ever more difficult geopolitical environment.

On inflation reduction act @ChadBown says that the future “will require WTO-inconsistent policies because non-market economies are already down that track”.
We can’t be “naive”, he says, and we need to “figure out how to do this together” (meaning 🇪🇺 and 🇺🇸)

It's a great pleasure to announce that the 2023 SIEL Global Biennial Conference will take place in Bogota in mid-July. The theme is IEL in time of Geo-Political Confrontation & Geo-Economic Fragmentation. Time to book tickets ... and submit paper, panel or poster proposal!
This is a major progress in resetting the relationship, toward a better understanding and management of differences while refocusing on common interests, what we have recently argued to be the right direction @MarkusAWagner@TooheyL
